Ready to Board Role Play
The aim of this activity is to provide an opportunity to board a
real plane. You can ask museum staff about using the Dan Air De
Havilland Comet, situated outside Hangar 1, for this activity or the
Jet Stream aircraft inside Hangar 2. Take a moment to inspect the
flight deck with instruments and controls situated in Hangar 2 next to
the Jet Stream aircraft.

Safety on Board
When travelling by plane it is important to keep safe at all times. At the
start of the flight a member of the flight crew will draw your attention to
certain emergency procedures and remind you to familiarise yourself with
the safety card in the pocket in front of your seat. Read the following points
and discuss their importance.
1.
Hand Baggage
Place hand baggage in the overhead lockers or under the seat in
front of you.
2.
Seatbelts
Seatbelts must be fastened on take-off and landing and also during
the flight when the seatbelt sign is illuminated.
3.
Brace Position
When you hear the word ‘Brace’ you must adopt this position
immediately. What is this? Why is it important? When would you
use it?
4.
Oxygen
If there is a failure in the air supply in the cabin during the flight,
oxygen masks will fall from the panel above your head. Place the
mask over your face and breathe normally. Put your own mask in
place before helping anyone else.
5.
Emergency Exit
Familiarise yourself with the nearest emergency exit. It might be
behind you.
Why is this important? When might you need to use it?
6.
Life Jackets
Life jackets are located under your seat. Why might you need a life
jacket? When might you need a life jacket? How would you put it
on? What would happen if you had a baby or small child travelling
with you?
7.
No Smoking
There is a no smoking rule on the flight at all times.
8.
Mobile phones
Do not use mobile phones or any other portable electronic
equipment during take-off and landing. Why?
