8. VISIONING ACTIVITY
Materials required:

Sticky notes or index cards (small and large)

Masking tape or sticky tack

Pen/pencil/marker for each participant

Wall space or flip chart

Small stickers (for dotmocracy process)
1.
Provide all members of the committee with sticky notes or index
cards.
2.
Get the committee thinking and pose the following
considerations:
Imagine what a healthy school community would:
a.
Look like
b.
Feel like
c.
Sound like
3.
Ask each member to write their thoughts and ideas on the
notes/cards (one thought per sticky note or index card).
4.
Once the participants have their ideas written down, ask each to
place their top 2-3 ideas on the wall.
5.
Participants may have more than 2-3 ideas captured. Ask
participants to save the extra sticky notes and index card(s) they
may have created – see step 8.
6.
Begin to categorize the various sticky notes by theme.
7.
Ask participants to come up with titles for the various themes.
Use larger index cards for this process.
8.
Once participants have grouped the ideas into themes, ask them
to look at the sticky notes/index cards they saved from step 4 to
see if:
a.
b.
There are any new ideas. If so, have the participants
add the cards to the wall and create new themes.
There are sticky notes/index cards related to existing
themes, set them aside.
9.
Provide each participant with 3 stickers. Use the stickers in a
dotmocracy process. This means each participant places a dot
on each of his or her top three themes. Participants can also
place multiple dots on one or more themes.
10. Count the stickers placed on each theme. The theme(s) with the
highest number of stickers are considered most important to the
committee.
11. Have the committee keep the notes/cards and grouped themes
for future use when selecting priorities for your committee’s area
of focus.
12. Using the top 2 to 3 themes, have participants begin to develop a
vision statement using those themes. The statement may be 1 to
2 sentences long.
Sample vision statements:
1.
Our vision, as a Healthy Schools Committee, is to create a
supportive and inviting environment that engages our school
community to improve and change the way we think about
healthy eating.
2.
All students at _______________________school will be offered
opportunities to become more physically active during the school
day.
3.
All members of the school community will participate in idea
sharing and engage in activities that enhance their health and
well-being.
