Newsletter 14June 2016 - Temuka Primary School

NEWSLETTER 14 JUNE 2016
Kia-Ora and welcome to our fortnightly newsletter. Yesterday
we welcomed two New Entrant students James Reihana (left)
and Jaxon Ngarewa (right) to our school. Also welcome are
Christy Na Year 1 from Waimate and Jayden
Whitta Year 5 from Southland.
We wish Mrs Judy Smith safe travels this
Friday as she heads back to the UK for three
weeks. During Mrs Smith’s absence Room
5 will be taught by Mrs Seymour who is a
regular relief teacher in our school. Next
week Mrs Cuthbertson has Mr Daniel Kelliher a teacher trainee
from the College of Education in her class for two weeks prior to
the holidays.
MATHS EVENING FOR PARENTS – WEDNESDAY 29 JUNE
Keep Wednesday 29 June free on your calendar – from 7.00 p.m. This is a parent
evening about Maths. Over recent years how we teach Mathematics has changed
since the time we as parents were at school. Throughout the evening we’ll show
with you what’s changed about Maths and how you as parents can support your
child’s learning, both at school and at home. The evening will be ‘hands on’ and
informative and a time for you to ask questions. We plan to start from 7.00 pm.
This will be held in our newly updated Team Rocket classrooms – more details next
newsletter.
OTAGO UNIVERSITY – SLEEP, EDUCATION & LEARNING SURVEY
From time to time we get asked to promote surveys that either the Canterbury or
Otago Universities are gathering data for. I am keen to support this particular study
that looks at how children’s sleep affects learners. I encourage you to take the time
and visit the website in question and complete the online questionnaire. By doing
so you will go into a draw to win a $150 supermarket voucher. The website and
facts about the survey can be read on the attached sheet supplied by the University
of Canterbury.
SCHOOL EVACUATION PROCEDURES
Under our Health and Safety procedures we are required to communicate our
evacuation processes to our families on an annual basis.
Once a term we have a fire drill to evacuate our buildings in the event of an
emergency. We have an assembly point on the netball court, but if necessary an
offsite assembly point at St Joseph’s Hall can be used. This offsite evacuation is
practiced annually.
We also have a ‘lock down’ or ‘calling in’ procedure which all schools are now
required to have. Recently this drill was successfully practiced using our recently
installed sirens. Like all drills we hope that we will never have to use them for the
‘real deal’.
BOOK WEEK
Friday Dress Up Day was the culmination of our Book Week celebration. Thanks to
all our students and families for taking part. Many costumes were outstanding and
would have taken considerable time to source for the day. Thanks Home and School
for providing the prizes for each class group. It was great to see a large turn-out
of parents at Friday’s school assembly. There are some photos on our school
Facebook site, but all are now on display on the office TV monitor.
Our Home and School worked tirelessly throughout the week at the Book Fair and
a huge thanks to the team of Mums who virtually ‘lived’ at school throughout the
week. I understand that book sales enabled the school to purchase around $600$700 worth of new library books for our school. Amazing effort and thanks so much
team!

NETBALL TEAM
The Temuka ACERs team who play 6-aside netball are having a great season. They
had another win on Saturday against St Joseph’s Timaru. The 6 aside game gives
players the opportunity to be involved fully in the game. The girls enjoy the fast
paced game where there are two centres, two attackers and two defences in each
team. It didn’t take the girls long to pick up the new rules and they work together
both on and off the court to play the game. Well done girls, keep up the great work.
Player of the Day went to Brylee Crawford for great passing and picking up the loose
ball.
The Temuka Tactix team are going from strength to strength. Though they lost on
Saturday to a very strong Beaconsfield team they still worked hard with only seven
players to keep the score close.
Player of the Day went to Anika Bagrie for her versatility and attacking skills.
Saturday 18 June Draw- Year 6 Temuka Tactix v Pleasant Point C—Court 9 at 11am.
Arrive at 10.30am. Year 5 Temuka ACERs v Rural Magic - Court 13 at 9am. Arrive
at 8.30 am (Kere Adams, Team Coach)
JUMP JAM
Our Jump Jam team has been working hard over the last month under the
instruction and guidance of Hayley Butcher. The nine girls and one boy practise
three times a week to ensure their final performance at the Theatre Royal will be
amazing.
The Jai Ho routine is a tricky one but the students have mastered the routine and
are now perfecting it. On Friday 16 June the group will perform their routine in the
bowl, during lunchtime, weather permitting.
The team will be performing in the Jump Jam Extravaganza at the Theatre Royal on
the 22 June starting at 9.30. Information will be sent home on Wednesday for all
students who are involved.
The Team is as follows: Anika Bagrie, Caniya Mana, Charlotte Bennett, Grace
Bennett, Shian Cosgerie, Ella Swete, Marissa Shannon, K’Dynce Hema, Phoebe
Francis and Eli Reuben.
A big thank you to Hayley Butcher for the time and hard work she has put into
ensuring the students are ready for their performance.
Please contact me if you have any queries or concerns. (Kere Adams, Teacher in
Charge)
MATARIKI WEEK
This Friday we have the Christchurch Science Alive Team visit our school bringing
the giant discovery dome. This will be set up in the school hall and it will give
students an opportunity to walk through the darkened dome and experience a 3D
visual of our solar system, particularly around the Matariki Constellation.

ICE SKATING, YEAR 3 & 4 TEAM ROCKET
Team Rocket have arranged with Ice Sport Tekapo to skate on Thursday 4 August
(postponement date Thursday 11 August). At this stage the cost will be similar to
2015 – around $25-$30 which allows for admission and bus transport. More details
closer to the time.
SCHOOL DONATIONS
There are still a number of families who have not paid their school donations.
Invoices have been sent out so we would appreciate payment as soon as possible
please.
SCHOOL UNIFORM DELIVERY DELAYS
We would like to apologise for recent delays in delivery of school uniform items
despite these being ordered early in the school year. This is due to Schooltex being
unable to promptly supply orders as apparently they greatly underestimated the
quantities required. We have had numerous promises, but we are ever optimistic
that these will arrive very shortly.
ASHTON SCHOLASTIC BOOK ORDERS
We are also experiencing massive delivery problems for those children who ordered
Lucky Books in March – we are still awaiting 8 items, as they have been ‘dribbling
through’ over the past month or so. We have spoken with Ashton numerous times
and they are aware that we are not happy with this. Thank you for your patience.
HOME AND SCHOOL (PTA)
PIE FUNDRAISER - We are embarking on a fundraising endeavour to sell pies,
savouries, sausage rolls and lamingtons from U-Bake. Each student will receive an
order form with this newsletter and we would love all families to get involved and
get selling to friends, family, neighbours and strangers down the street! The order
form needs to be returned to the school office by Wednesday 29th June
with all the money for the orders.
The orders will be ready to be picked up from the school hall at 3pm on
Wednesday 27th July and then it will be up to you to deliver your pies to your
people.
BOOK FAIR - A HUGE thank you to all families who came shopping at our Book
Fair last week! We are delighted to announce that we were able to purchase over
$750 worth of books for our school library! Well done everyone! A special mention
to coordinator Maree Larsen who did a fantastic job pulling it all together and to her
team of faithful helpers – you are legends! Lastly we are excited to announce the
winners of the prize draw we were running throughout the week:
Juniors:
Lily Crosbie Rm 5, Victor Resende Rm 5
Middles:
Keisha Griffin Hub 3, Lachlan Stratford Hub 1
Seniors:
Thea McNoe Rm 6, Ollie Reid Rm 6
Congratulations to all our winners. Your prizes will be delivered to your class rooms
this week.
Our next Home and School Team meeting is Thursday 30th June at 3:15pm in
the MP room. We would love you to join us! Anyone is welcome to come along to
our meetings and find out what we are all about. The children are supervised in the
playground by senior students and our meetings don’t go longer than an hour.
