Inserting a specimen holder

STARTING THE MICROSCOPE
LOGON TO THE COMPUTER
Using your logon and password.
START SOFTWARE
Start the four programs shown in the shortcut tray below, starting from left and to the
right.
1. Microscope control
2. Filter control
3. Digital Micrograph
4. TIA (Technai imaging and analysis)
Don’t start one program until the previous is up and running. (The software may start
to argue about ownership of hardware)
CHECK VACUUM
Compare the Vacuum control panel from
the “Microscope Control” software. The
Gun vacuum MUST be 1 using Log scale.
If not, something is wrong. Furthermore,
the column must be less than 20 and is
usually much lower. Finally the camera
should be less than 30.
OPEN COLUMN VALVE V7
Press the lower left button “Col. Valves
Closed”. When the button is grey, the valve is open and electrons are able to travel
down the optical axis.
INCREASE THE EXTRACTION
VOLTAGE
The FEG extraction voltage should be set
to a 3 kV during standby (to increase the
FEG lifetime). Press the “Operate” button
(turns yellow) to automatically increase
the Extr. Voltage to 3800 V. By klicking
the up/down arrows and the “Enter”
button, you can increase the extraction
voltage. 4000 is usually enough.
There should now be a beam on the fluorescent screen.
