The material outlined in this guide defines some of the policies and procedures for all
students participating in the Codman Academy Charter Public School’s Middle School

Athletics Department. It is intended to provide parents and students with a better
understanding of the Athletics Department’s philosophy, goals and policies. . Please
feel free to refer to the Wellness Director during the course of the school year to help
answer any questions you may have concerning all student-athletes’ experience. Also,
please show your support by regularly attending athletic events and showcases.
The following policy statement from the National Federation of State High School
Associations expresses the concept of sportsmanship as follows:
“The ideals of good sportsmanship, ethical behavior, and integrity permeate our
culture. The values of good citizenship and high behavioral standards apply
equally to all activity disciplines. In perception and practice, good sportsmanship
shall be defined as those qualities of behavior, which are characterized by
generosity and genuine concern for others. Further, awareness is expected of
the impact of an individual’s influence on the behavior of others. Good
sportsmanship is viewed as a concrete measure of the understanding and
commitment to fair play, ethical behavior and integrity.”
Athletic Teams Goals
1. To enable as many students as possible to experience the benefits of athletic
competition and team membership.
2. To develop appropriate attitudes toward competition, sportsmanship and selfdiscipline.
3. To develop and acquire athletic skills.
4. To improve physical conditioning as a requisite for good health.
5. Teach rules, skills and encourage good sportsmanship.
6. Develop school pride.
7. Teach athletes to learn to accept their roles as team players.
8. Establish the foundation for students to participate in high school athletics if they
choose to do so.
9. Acknowledge athletic accomplishments.
MS Athletics Eligibility
Above Developing in Academic classes.
Above Developing in Elective Classes.
Absent day of game can not play or practice.
2 unexcused absences from practice = sit out next game.
3 unexcused absences from practice = sit out next game, on probation.
2 reflections send outs/week = one game suspension. No detention.
2 suspensions from games = probation.
Sportsmanship
Need to respect coaches, teammates, opposing players, referees and parents
No taunting, trash talking, antagonizing, bullying on and off the court (including
cyber)
No hazing is permitted (the imposition of strenuous, often humiliating, tasks as
part of a program of rigorous physical training and initiation.)
Parents are held responsible to model and encourage proper sportsmanship.

1 offense can = probation or removed from team.
2nd offense can = removed from team.
Preparedness
Need to have all appropriate clothing.
Sneakers and proper attire is a must.
Guys Sneaker, no tank tops, sweatpants and athletic shorts only, school
appropriate t shirt.
Girls sneakers, no tank tops, no see through attire, athletic undergarments, no
leggings/yoga pants.
Students not dressed appropriately for practice will be asked to change into
appropriate clothing for practice.
Travel
Be on time for busses (All departures will be sent home)
Parents are Responsible for pick up after games (Bus always drops off at
Codman)
In permission slip parents need to specify their individual transportation needs
All away games and corresponding times will be communicated to families.
Uniform
Jersey and shorts are provided.
No fee to play.
Sneakers will not be provided.
School Closings
Early Dismissal of Students - All after-school activities will be cancelled when the
students are sent home during the day due to inclement weather.
Schools Closed - When schools have closed due to inclement weather, all
games, practices and activities will be cancelled and rescheduled for a later date.

I am permitting my child
to participate on the
Varsity Basketball team for the 2016 - 2017 season. If my child suffers an injury while
participating in a school related activity, I give the coach and/or designated school
personnel in charge permission to obtain medical treatment for my child if I cannot be
immediately contacted. Following treatment, the coach and/or or other school official will
notify me as soon as possible regarding the nature of the injury and any treatment
rendered.
In the event my child sustains a concussion or any injury, I give permission to the school
nurse and/or athletic trainer to discuss his/her condition with his/her physician, guidance
counselor, or any other necessary staff member, in order to facilitate the recovery
process. I acknowledge that Codman Academy is not responsible for any injury
sustained during athletic games/practices or workouts.
