An Owl Visits Our Classroom

An Owl Visits Our Classroom
Mrs. Amy came to visit the preschool classes. She works at the
Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center. She told us all about owls.
She showed us that owls have sharp claws called talons.
They use their talons to pick up their prey.
Owls don’t have a nose. They have a beak.
Their beak is very sharp.
We touched an owl’s feathers. It was very soft. Mrs. Amy said that owls have
spacers in their feathers which make them silent when they fly.
An owl’s eyes are very large in proportion to their heads. If our eyes were
proportionally that large, they would be the size of tennis balls! An owl’s large
eyes help it to hunt for food at night. Owls can’t roll their eyes from side to
side like humans can. Instead, they have the ability to rotate their heads 280
degrees- almost a full circle.
Mrs. Amy showed us Otus. She is a screech owl. She lives at the Nature
Center because she is blind in one eye. She eats crickets and small mice.
Otus was very small and cute! She has sharp talons. You can see that Mrs. Amy wore
gloves so she didn’t get hurt by the sharp talons.
