3.FOA Purpose
Seeks research grant
applications designed to
develop innovative ways of
understanding mental
disorders in clinical studies on
the basis of experimental
research criteria rather than
traditional diagnostic
categories. This FOA stems
from the NIMH Research
Domain Criteria (RDoC)
project that is intended to
further a long-range goal of
contributing to diagnostic
systems as informed by

institutions/organizations to

which the gut microbiome
modulates the development
and function of brain circuits
that subserve behavioral
functions of direct relevance
to the mission of the NIMH.
Because initial colonization of
the gut by microbiota occurs
early in life and may influence
the subsequent development
and modifiability of the
central nervous system,
developmental studies are of
The purpose of this funding
opportunity is to encourage
collaboration between
alcohol researchers in the
extramural community and
those within the NIAAA
intramural research
program. The objective of
this Funding Opportunity
Announcement is to bring
together the research
expertise that, as a
functioning collaborative
unit, will address key
alcohol-based research
questions that would not
otherwise be possible by the
FOA is intended to support
environmental health
research in which an
unpredictable opportunity has
arisen to collect human
biosample or exposure data
(e.g., following natural or
made-made disasters, health
care policy changes, etc). The
three distinguishing features
of an eligible study are: 1)
the unforeseeable nature of
the opportunity; 2) the clear
scientific value and feasibility
of the study; and 3) the need
for rapid review and funding
(substantially shorter than the

The purpose of this FOA is to
encourage applications to
study mechanisms that may
cut across multiple traditional
diagnostic categories.
Applications submitted in
response to this FOA should
be based upon RDoC criteria
(see
http://www.nimh.nih.gov/res
earch-funding/rdoc.shtml for
the RDoC criteria developed
to date). Five organizing
domains have been identified
in the draft specification.
These include Negative
Valence Systems (i.e.,
aversive motivational
dimensions), Positive Valence
Systems, Cognitive Systems,
Social Process Systems, and
particular interest. Applicants
may propose to use wildtype, gnotobiotic, or specific
pathogen-free model
organisms and/or human
cohorts. With this FOA, the
NIMH encourages investigator
teams to initiate hypothesisdriven research in this crosscutting research area and to
identify promising
mechanistic leads for future
basic and translational
research that will advance the
mission of the NIMH.

The shortened time frame will
be achieved by more frequent
application due dates and
expediting peer review,
council concurrence and
award issuance. The entire
cycle from submission to
award is expected to be
within 3-4 months.
