Some of you have been connected to NNU for years and others of you are connecting with NNU for the very first time, but all of you are a part of the NNU community as the parent of a current student – and we are very excited to welcome you. At NNU we believe that students do not come to college alone. Each student is connected to family, friends and supporters. As you invest your resources to make it possible for your child to attend NNU, we want to offer you some resources and support that will enhance both your child’s experience and your experience. We believe that by partnering with you and keeping you informed and engaged in the university, we will strengthen our NNU community. Inside your Parent Handbook, you will find a variety of resources that will help you as you seek to help your student succeed. It is our desire to provide many opportunities to become connected to this community. Ultimately, we want your student to grow intellectually, spiritually and socially—and thus fulfill the NNU mission of transforming the whole person. Thank you for your confidence in Northwest Nazarene University and for entrusting your child to us. I hope that you will plan now to attend our first annual Parent’s Weekend later this spring. Blessings, Joel Pearsall President 4 THE HISTORY OF NNU A desire to educate their own children led the founders of Northwest Nazarene University (NNU), under leadership of Eugene Emerson, to organize an elementary school in 1913. In the ensuing two years, both high school and college courses were added to the curriculum. Thus began Northwest Nazarene University, a fully-accredited, co-educational, Christian comprehensive University of the arts, humanities, sciences and professions. In 1915, the first student graduated from high school, and a year later Dr. H. Orton Wiley was elected President. The first degrees were conferred upon a class of four graduates in 1917. Academic progress has been notable, including accreditation as a junior college in 1931 and as a four-year college in 1937. Master’s programs were added in the mid-sixties. The name of the institution was changed from Northwest Nazarene College to Northwest Nazarene University in 1999. NNU changed from quarters to semesters, May, 2000. The university presently offers over 60 areas of study, 18 master’s degrees in seven different disciplines and two doctoral degrees. In addition to its 88-acre campus located in Nampa, Idaho, the University also offers programs online as well as in Boise, Idaho Falls and in cooperation with programs in 35 countries. Today, NNU serves over 2,000 undergraduate and graduate students, more than 6,000 continuing education students, and 2,300 high school students through the concurrent credit program. Week One During the first week on campus in the fall, students gather for daily activities to reunite after summer break and meet some of the new students that have joined our community. These events are sponsored and organized by the Student Government Association (SGA). Activities throughout the week include the SGA bonfire, Rootbeerfest, Jazz on the Lawn, Rollerscamming and Friday Night Lights. Freshman Retreat After completing the first week of class, the entire freshman class takes busses to McCall for the weekend. Here, new students get to know their classmates as they play games, explore McCall and enjoy the outdoors. Freshman Retreat is a great way to meet classmates and acclimate to college life. Timeout Timeout is a weekly praise and worship service led by students for students. Each week students participate in singing, prayer, communion and encouragement. The Brick House The Brick House is open all the time for students to use as a study and social space. Staffed by student residents, this historic home on NNU’s campus has a coffee bar, full kitchen, a small theatre, big-screen TV for watching movies and plenty of space for students to relax. The resident student leaders put on events for the whole student body twice a month that will show up on the social calendar. Ranging from lazer tag to picnics, TWIRP has become an annual highlight for many NNU students. 12 Homecoming and Family Weekend Homecoming provides a chance for current students to interact with former students, as well as give parents a perfect weekend to visit. Activities range from plays and concerts to a food truck rally and athletic events. Mr. NNU Mr. NNU is an annual pageant, for guys. Unlike Miss America, Mr. NNU features the talent (i.e. ridiculousness) of NNU’s best and brightest and most hysterical men. At the end of the evening only one is crowned Mr. NNU. The Black Tie Event Held off campus at a special venue, this formal event features top-notch entertainment and an elegant evening. It’s the perfect opportunity to invite that special someone or gather a group of friends for a fun evening out. Week Done With summer right around the corner, Week Done is a time to gather with friends and celebrate the end of the school year.
