Dear Parents,
Welcome to Northwest Nazarene University! Some of you have been connected to
NNU for years and others of you are connecting with NNU for the very first time,
but all of you are a part of the NNU community as the parent of a current student –
and we are very excited to welcome you.
At NNU we believe that students do not come to college alone. Each student is
connected to family, friends and supporters. As you invest your resources to make
it possible for your child to attend NNU, we want to offer you some resources and
support that will enhance both your child’s experience and your experience. We
believe that by partnering with you and keeping you informed and engaged in the
university, we will strengthen our NNU community.
Inside your Parent Handbook, you will find a variety of resources that will help
you as you seek to help your student succeed. It is our desire to provide many
opportunities to become connected to this community. Ultimately, we want your
student to grow intellectually, spiritually and socially—and thus fulfill the NNU
mission of transforming the whole person.
Thank you for your confidence in Northwest Nazarene University and for entrusting
your child to us. I hope that you will plan now to attend our first annual Parent’s
Weekend later this spring.
Blessings,
Joel Pearsall
President

THE HISTORY OF NNU
A desire to educate their own children led the founders of Northwest Nazarene
University (NNU), under leadership of Eugene Emerson, to organize an elementary
school in 1913. In the ensuing two years, both high school and college courses
were added to the curriculum. Thus began Northwest Nazarene University, a
fully-accredited, co-educational, Christian comprehensive University of the arts,
humanities, sciences and professions.
In 1915, the first student graduated from high school, and a year later Dr. H. Orton
Wiley was elected President. The first degrees were conferred upon a class of four
graduates in 1917.
Academic progress has been notable, including accreditation as a junior college
in 1931 and as a four-year college in 1937. Master’s programs were added in the
mid-sixties. The name of the institution was changed from Northwest Nazarene
College to Northwest Nazarene University in 1999. NNU changed from quarters to
semesters, May, 2000.
The university presently offers over 60 areas of study, 18 master’s degrees
in seven different disciplines and two doctoral degrees. In addition to its 88-acre
campus located in Nampa, Idaho, the University also offers programs online as
well as in Boise, Idaho Falls and in cooperation with programs in 35 countries.
Today, NNU serves over 2,000 undergraduate and graduate students, more than
6,000 continuing education students, and 2,300 high school students through the
concurrent credit program.

MISSION, VISION & VALUES
MISSION
The mission of Northwest Nazarene University is the transformation of the whole
person. Centered in Jesus Christ, the NNU education instills habits of heart, soul,
mind and strength to enable each student to become God’s creative and redemptive
agent in the world.
Northwest Nazarene University is a Christian university of the liberal arts,
professional and graduate studies. The University is grounded in the WesleyanHoliness tradition and is an educational expression of the Northwest field of the
Church of the Nazarene.
Northwest Nazarene University is founded upon belief in and relationship with the
One Triune God—Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Therefore, we seek to build our lives
and the practices of the University upon the Kingdom of God as revealed in Jesus.
VISION
Guided by a vision of the Kingdom of God, Northwest Nazarene University seeks a
more excellent way, to be a transformative learning community expressing the love
of Jesus by forming scholars, nurturing disciples, serving the Church, shaping the
culture, redeeming the world.
VALUES
Transformation—We believe education fosters transformation. NNU engages
and affects all domains of life—intellectual, social, physical and spiritual—thereby
advancing the transformation of the individual, the church and the world.
Truth—We believe education pursues truth. NNU explores knowledge, the wonder
of God’s creative activity, the story of human civilization and the achievements in the
arts, sciences and professions. Ultimately, we believe Jesus is the truth incarnate;
therefore, we pursue Christ.
Community—We believe education flourishes in community. NNU provides a
learning and faith community that teaches, challenges and encourages each other
through intellectual and spiritual practices. Within covenantal relationships, we
express our love for God and others.
Service—We believe education cultivates service. NNU teaches the importance
of a life of servanthood as modeled by Jesus Christ. We learn to lead by giving of
ourselves to God and humankind.

NNU TRADITIONS
If your student starts posting pictures on Instagram of some crazy stunts or college
students dressed in strange costumes, don’t worry. She’s probably just documenting
some NNU campus traditions. To give you a head start on your NNU traditions
knowledge, we’ve highlighted the big ones. To learn about more, go to
nnu.edu/campuslife.
Week One
During the first week on campus in the fall, students gather for daily activities to
reunite after summer break and meet some of the new students that have joined our
community. These events are sponsored and organized by the Student Government
Association (SGA). Activities throughout the week include the SGA bonfire,
Rootbeerfest, Jazz on the Lawn, Rollerscamming and Friday Night Lights.
Freshman Retreat
After completing the first week of class, the entire freshman class takes busses to
McCall for the weekend. Here, new students get to know their classmates as they
play games, explore McCall and enjoy the outdoors. Freshman Retreat is a great way
to meet classmates and acclimate to college life.
Timeout
Timeout is a weekly praise and worship service led by students for students. Each
week students participate in singing, prayer, communion and encouragement.
The Brick House
The Brick House is open all the time for students to use as a study and social space.
Staffed by student residents, this historic home on NNU’s campus has a coffee
bar, full kitchen, a small theatre, big-screen TV for watching movies and plenty of
space for students to relax. The resident student leaders put on events for the whole
student body twice a month that will show up on the social calendar.
Club Fair
Club Fair, held at the beginning of each school year, introduces students to the
variety of social, academic and ministry clubs that our campus offers
Fresheree
NNU’s all-school variety show Fresheree gives brave students an opportunity to
showcase their hidden talents and for others to belly laugh at them.
TWIRP Weekend
TWIRP stands for The Woman is Required to Pay. This all-school event is a twoday, giant group date that takes place on a Friday and Saturday night with activities
happening all over the Boise Valley. Ranging from lazer tag to picnics, TWIRP has
become an annual highlight for many NNU students.
12
Homecoming and Family Weekend
Homecoming provides a chance for current students to interact with former
students, as well as give parents a perfect weekend to visit. Activities range from
plays and concerts to a food truck rally and athletic events.
Mr. NNU
Mr. NNU is an annual pageant, for guys. Unlike Miss America, Mr. NNU features
the talent (i.e. ridiculousness) of NNU’s best and brightest and most hysterical men.
At the end of the evening only one is crowned Mr. NNU.
The Black Tie Event
Held off campus at a special venue, this formal event features top-notch
entertainment and an elegant evening. It’s the perfect opportunity to invite that
special someone or gather a group of friends for a fun evening out.
Week Done
With summer right around the corner, Week Done is a time to gather with friends
and celebrate the end of the school year. It features ultimate frisbee and kickball
tournaments, an annual highlight video, yearbook signing (yeah, we do that) and lots
of food and fun.

INVOLVEMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS
ENCOURAGE YOUR STUDENT TO GET INVOLVED
NNU provides opportunity to get involved in a variety of extra and co-curricular
clubs and organizations. Encourage your student to get involved!
NNU organizations include:
• Student Government Association (SGA) members are elected by their class
to serve the Class Council in one of the three branches of student government:
the legislative, judicial or executive branch. It is through this group that student
events are planned and student fees are allocated and spent. NNU’s SGA makes
events such as broom hockey, TWIRP, Black Tie and Week Done possible.
• The Crusader is the student-run school newspaper. The editor is appointed by
department faculty, and, in turn, appoints the newspaper editors and staff. All
students are encouaged to join the staff and be involved in reporting, writing,
taking pictures, doing layout and working in many other areas.
• The Oasis is the yearbook publication, edited and published each year by a
student staff. The editor is appointed by the Executive Cabinet. The editor
appoints an associate editor and staff. All students are encouraged to assist in the
publication.
• Social Board is chaired by the SGA Social Vice President and is comprised of
students from each academic class, elected by class members. The Social Board’s
primary responsibilities include advertising, planning and execution of NNU
social events such as Week One, TWIRP Weekend, Black Tie and Week One/
Done. The board also works to enhance the school activity calendar by providing
regular campus events.
• Community Relations Board is chaired by the SGA Director of Community
Relations and is comprised of appointed student representatives from each
academic class. The Community Relations Board’s primary responsibilities

CHAPEL
Why do we have chapel? There are some things we all need to learn. The mind

need to hear. There are voices of challenge, and hope and cries of desperate need

one seeks the kingdom of God alone. We worship together, we pray together and we
make a difference together. We have chapel at NNU because there are some things
we all need.
DISCIPLESHIP GROUPS
NNU offers a variety of discipleship groups (D Groups) in which students may
participate. Students meet together to learn, grow and journey together. They’ll

STUDENT HEALTH INSURANCE
Good health is important for academic success! For this reason, NNU requires
all students to have health insurance. For students who are uninsured or have limited
access to health care, NNU provides a Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP). For
SHIP information details, please visit wellnesscenter.nnu.edu/medical-insurance.
The following groups of students will be automatically billed for the SHIP:
1.returning students who were admitted (or readmitted) in Fall 2015 or later;
2.new, readmit and transfer students;
3.international students
Waiving Out: Students may waive out of the SHIP by submitting a waiver along
with a copy of their insurance card. Instructions for submitting the waiver are printed
on the form found at the website above.
Opting In: Students admitted before Fall 2015 are not required to provide proof of
insurance but they may opt-in to the SHIP; see details at the website above.
NNU SHIP Annual Rate: $1,855.00
Covers August 1, 2016 - July 31, 2017

CENTER FOR ACADEMIC SUCCESS AND ADVISING
CASA, the Center for Academic Success & Advising, is the epicenter for supporting
students in pursuit of their academic goals. CASA support begins when prospective
students in the College of Arts & Sciences (CAS) consider their first semester
schedule at NNU. CASA works closely with the Admissions Team and the Registrar’s
Office to create schedules for all incoming students enrolling in CAS. From the first
day of classes through commencement, CASA offers a full array of academic services
including: tutoring, academic coaching, disability support for academics, academic
advising for select majors and “deciding” students, and test proctoring services.
Academic progress is monitored each semester and the CASA faculty/staff offers
additional assistance for students on academic probation seeking to improve.
Disability Support Services (DSS) for all students at the University are available
through CASA. DSS exists to ensure access to the University and its programs
by students with disabilities. The office coordinates and provides reasonable
accommodations, advocates for an accessible and hospitable learning environment,
and promotes self-determination on the part of the individuals served.
Finally, CASA supports the educational mission of NNU by providing high quality
testing services in accordance with the National College Testing Association
Professional Standards and Guidelines and governmental regulations. The services
provided for students, faculty, staff, community members and business partners
will be consistently rendered with an attitude of service that demonstrates value for
relationships, personal excellence, diversity and commitment to lifelong learning.
