From the players on the team to the weather being faced, change is inevitable. However, the joy and happiness at the end of the season for the Lady Bearcats golf team has stayed the same. Winning five out of the last seven state championships and seven since 2003, the girls golf team has built a dynasty. This championship, just like any other, felt special in its own way. “There is always something special about each one,” Head coach Mike Klein said. “This one was really cool as far as I’m concerned just because of the way it played out and nobody thought we were going to be any good this year. We proved them wrong.” After leading by seven strokes the first day of the tournament, the girls golf team won the state championship by twelve strokes over Omaha Skutt. Senior Jordan York lead the lady cats with a score of 159 (80-79), winning the individual “It was really exciting because nobody really expected us to do as good as we did. It was really awesome.” -Shelby Poynter,9 state championship. Junior Hannah Holloway was the other medalist for the team shooting a 175 (85-90) placing eighth in the tournament. Junior Karlie Johnson (102104-206), freshman Shelby Poynter (104-105-212) and senior Jocelyn Bruner (109-105214) all contributed to the Cats achieving their goal of a state championship. Klein lauded Johnson, Poynter, and Bruner’s performance in their first state tournament. “They bought into the mentality that it’s just golf,” Klein said. “Just because it’s labeled the state tournament, you don’t have to do anything else than go play golf. All three of their scores counted one day or another, so everybody did their part and did awesome.” The teams hard work ethic and drive to improve took them where they wanted to go. “Our girls worked really hard and improved a lot,” York said. “We started winning some tournaments and then going into state we thought we had a chance to win. After being up seven the first day, we realized that we could actually win.” “Winning a state championship felt amazing. It was a surreal experience for me, and a surprise to our entire team.” -Karlie Johnson, 11 For senior Jordan York, golf is life. York lead the lady’s golf team to a state championship as well as claiming the gold individually. Winning the individual gold medal was no fluke either. “During the summer I golf about 20 hours a week,” York said. “In season I golf about 10 hours a week, not including tournaments.” York puts in the time and effort to achieve her goals. Many people would get bored or tired after doing anything for 20 hours a week but for York, it was all worth it. “It feels great to be a state champion,” York said. “It was my main goal going into the season and it’s a great feeling knowing I ended well.” “She had an unbelievable year, and to finish it the way she finished it was awesome,” coach Mike Klein said. “Sometimes you get down here and somebody has a couple hot days, but Jordan deserved what she got. She’s the best player here.” “It was fun and exciting to see our hard work pay off even through the ups and downs. It was fun to come out on top.” -Jocelyn Bruner, 12 “It was cool. We worked hard and even though we weren’t expecting it, we were able to come out on top.” - Hannah Holloway, 11
