Joshua: Conquering New Ground
#1 Called By God - Joshua 1
6. Look carefully at Joshua 1:8. It’s the only verse from 6-9 that doesn’t
include the phrase “Be strong and courageous.” It instead gives Joshua
some very important instructions. What are they? How might the words
“prosperous” and “successful” be misunderstood? What does it mean to
be prosperous and successful?
Conversation: Getting in touch with each other...
7. What does it mean to meditate upon God’s Word day and night? How is
that related to courage? How could a passion for the Word of God make
you a more courageous person?
1. If you were Joshua, what would you have been feeling after the death of
Moses? What kinds of fears do you think Joshua was battling?
8. Examine verses 16-18. How did the people respond to Joshua’s
instructions before entering the land? How is the people’s response
different from that of the previous generation (See Numbers 14:1-10)?
2. What types of fears do the people around you face from day to day?
What kind of fears do you face?
3. When you look back at your life, can you recall times in your life have
you ignored God’s call? Share about a particular situation and how
you responded. What was God calling you to be as a person (for
example: strong, forgiving, etc)?
Consideration: Grasping the issues...
Connection: Taking this challenge home...
1. How has God been calling you lately? What action steps can you take to
show God a positive response?
1. What does God tell Joshua to do in 1:1-9? List all the commands you
can find.
2. The Word of God needed to be the focus of Joshua’s life. How can you be
more intentional in reading God’s Word, meditating on the Word, and
living it out?
2. God’s Word is filled with promises. What are the two promises that God
gave to Joshua (Verses 3-5)? How are these promises relevant to us
today?
3. In what ways does God want you to personally be strong in your current
situation? How does Ephesians 6:10-11 provide perspective?
3. What role will God have in the conquest of the land He has promised
(notice a repeated idea in Joshua 1:2-3,5,9,11,13-15)? What hope and
perspectives does God’s role give us in our current situations? In what
ways do we assume God’s role at times?
4. What will be Israel’s responsibilities in obtaining the land (1:2,7-18)?
5. Three times in verses 6-9 God tells Joshua to be strong and courageous.
Why do you think God repeated himself so much in these verses? What
are the greatest ways that Christians need to be strong and courageous
in our current day? In what ways is this similar and different to Joshua’s
situation?
Prayer Focus: Taking time to pray as a church...
Ask God to help you be strong and courageous in your effort to be obedient
to what God is calling you to. Be intentional this week through responding
with actions, as you say “YES” to God’s call.
