The opportunities for students are extensive and we thank you for your continued support of students and their learning. We will this week recognise the students who have achieved consistent excellence in their mid-year assessments and reports. Students and parents contribute who achieve this distinction should be proud. This week is a vitally important one in maintaining the academic progress of our students. The three way (student, parent and teacher) discussions are pivotal to accelerating the learning progress. Please ensure you are able to attend at the appointment time which is confirmed on the cover of the discussion starter document. If you don’t have a time or, for some reason you are unable to make the appointment, please contact Jan in our office to arrange an alternative. If you wish to speak with me please do call and make an appointment. Year 8 children will interact a full range of secondary schools during the next two weeks. It is time to make decisions and enrol. Our school does not become involved in making or advising on schools selections. We recommend you clarify your child’s learning needs and styles during the interviews or by making a time to discuss “your child’s learning needs” to assist with decisions. Please contact us by phone or email if there are any matters requiring attention to assist children and their learning. Staff members are not always available immediately, but leave a message and we will respond just as soon as possible. Three way Interviews are being held Tuesday and Wednesday this week. Please ring if you have any queries around these. DNI Open Night ACHIEVEMENT INSPIRATION CONFIDENCE Tuesday 5th August, 6:30pm Ka Kite ano, Ross Leach (For the DNI Team) PO Box 8016, Gardens / 34 North Rd, Dunedin 9010 03 473 9027 [email protected] [email protected] 1 Year 7 Year 7 teachers look forward to the opportunity to discuss learning targets with your children during three way interviews this Tuesday and Wednesday. Parents and caregivers are reminded to read through their child's mid-year report, discuss it with their child, and to bring it along to the scheduled interview. These interviews provide areas to focus on for the remainder of the year and give children the chance to have input into this process. On Wednesday next week at 6.30pm there will be a meeting for parents regarding the Year 7 topic for term 3, 'Positive Puberty'. During this meeting, year 7 teachers will discuss the unit of work and go over some of the teaching resources. This gives parents or caregivers a chance to ask any questions before the unit of work starts in week 4 of the term. We look forward to seeing many of you there in Room 10 on Wednesday the 30th July, 6.30pm. Lastly, the term 3 overview for the Year 7 syndicate is attached to the newsletter. We are lucky to have the country's general election to bring relevance and meaning to our topic of government. This 'communities and organisations' social sciences topic will encourage children to research and investigate a different form of government from New Zealand's democratic structure. Students will then be able to make comparisons to these alternatives. Teachers are looking forward to children leading their own political parties and running mini-elections in home classrooms. Looking forward to a busy term 3. Please feel free to contact teachers regarding the needs of your child or for information on upcoming events. Regards Greg Lees on behalf of the Year 7 Teaching Team. Sausage Sizzle Friday! Every Friday this term, sausages are for sale at lunchtime for $2.00. This is a fundraiser for the AIMS Games Tauranga teams. Onions, mustard, the works and only $2.00. Make every Friday lunch a BBQ sausage.......or two.......or three! Science Fair This week in classes we will see the results of hard work and focus throughout Term 2 coming to fruition. Science Fair display boards are getting a few last minute finishing touches before going on show from Tuesday next week. Teachers and students have gathered background research, conducted fair tests, and graphed results to either prove or disprove their hypothesis. The judges for 2014 will have their hands full in deciding which projects meet the criteria to progress through to the Otago Science Fair which is taking place in week three of the term. Some display boards will be on show during three way interviews this week but all will be on display for parents and caregivers on judging day, Tuesday the 29th of July. Elective’s Report D.N.I students enjoyed the fashion elective with Mrs Butler. First we had to choose a pattern or designoneofourown.Thenwehadtocutoutthe material needed. After that we sorted out the materialsandfollowedtheinstructions(ifwehad some as some of us created our own patterns). Lastly, we started sewing. Some people finished before the four days were up which meant we could make something else. At the end of the elective three people were chosen to go into the fashion competition. These people were Scarlett Rogers,ChloeRobertsonandLydiaKnox. The Term starts off being extremely busy with many events happening early on. First up we have three way interviews on Tuesday and Wednesday evening this week. A great chance to catch up on your child’s progress mid year and re evaluate the goals set from Term 1. Thursday, Friday this week and Monday next week we also have open mornings at several of the high schools in Dunedin. A notice has gone home for the students today and outlines the timetable for these visits. Choosing a high school is an important decision and we suggest students have a checklist of opportunities they are looking for and see which schools tick the boxes for them. A swimming notice has also gone home today and outlines the programme for Year 8’s. We cannot stress how important swimming is and we appreciate your assistance in making sure your child is prepared on the days we attend the pool. We request that students who are unable to swim on a particular day have a genuine excuse and bring a signed note to school. The topic for Year 8 this Term is Young Entrepreneur. The unit will focus on Financial Literacy and being a Consumer. It will end with students pitching a business idea to their class. One idea from each class will go to market and become a fund raising activity for their class. The unit also ties in with our persuasive writing English topic in relation to advertising. Consultation Meeting Thank you to those who have given feedback on the PE and Health Review Online Survey which was distributed late last term. Your views are very valuable. As part of the next stage of the consultation regarding Sexuality Education in the school’s curriculum, a meeting has been scheduled for Wednesday the 30th of July to look at what a Sexuality Education programme at DNI would look like and ask questions maybe asked on the topic. We are going to combine this meeting with the annual parent meeting which is held every year to inform parents about the upcoming Year 7 Positive Puberty Unit.
