Our school is in La Spezia, a small town by the sea in the north west of Italy. Background Our school was founded in 1978. A few years later it was called “Jean Piaget” after the famous Swiss psychologist. Now it is the only middle school in a comprehensive institute of 6 schools. Our school It's a middle school with 16 classes of about 22 students each that are aged 11 to 14. There are 5 first years, 6 second years and 5 third years. There are 30 teachers. Learning Piaget’s way Discovery learning – we learn best by doing and actively exploring! When do we go to school? We go to school from Monday to Saturday from 8am to 1pm. We have 10 minutes break at 9:55. We can stay for lunch in the canteen if we attend workshops in the afternoon. What do we study? Language and literature studies We study Italian – grammar, literature for 3 hours a week. We study English for 3 hours and French/Spanish or German for 2 hours a week. Science, maths and technical subjects We study technology and technical drawing for 2 hours a week. We study maths, geometry and science for 6 hours a week. History and geography We study history and geography for 4 hours a week. Art, music, physical education and catholic studies/alternative studies We have 2 hours of music – we learn to play the recorder or keyboard; 2 hours of Art – history and practical; 2 hours of PE; 1 hour of catholic religion studies.
