ENGLISH Allan Ahlberg In Reading, the children will use three texts written by Allan Ahlberg to further develop their reading and comprehension skills. The children will summarise the main ideas in each story, answer questions about the characters feelings, thoughts and motives. The children up will be expected to justify their responses using evidence from the text. This term in Writing, the children will continue to embed spelling, grammar, vocabulary and punctuation skills. They will write descriptive paragraphs that give the reader a clear understanding of characters. They will learn how to interweave dialogue into their narrative writing. As well as write more formal texts such as reports and explanations. MUSIC Benjamin Britten-A New Year Carol In Music lessons, the children will listen to ‘A new Year Carol’. They will find out about how to improve their singing in pitch with the melody of the song. They will also look at different styles of the song including gospel. Later in the term we will be working hard on our Christmas carols and performance songs for Puss in Boots. HISTORY A legacy of Roman culture on Britain today This half-term we will be looking at the Roman Empire and the effect it had on Britain. We will look at the Roman Empire, Julius Caesar and his attempted invasion, The Roman Army, British resistance, The Romanisation of Britain, and their number and writing systems. We are also hoping to visit Vindolanda to gain a special understanding of what life was like in the Roman Empire. SCIENCE Light MATHS In Maths, the children will continue to develop their understanding of the number system. They will deepen their understating of concepts such as place value, ordering and comparing numbers. As mental arithmetic is fundamental the children will continue to develop their rapid recall skills through a range of interactive activities. This will also link to the weekly timetable test. The children will learn to solve problems involving multiplication and division using formal written methods. The children will be expected to use specific mathematical vocabulary of prime numbers, prime factors, and square and cube numbers. As part of measures the children will also convert between different units. For example, kilometre and metre. Class 5A Autumn 2 - 2016 In Science, the children will plan different types of scientific enquiry to answer questions about light. The will explore how light behaves, including light sources, reflection and refraction. The children will demonstrated their knowledge and understanding by recording results and observation with increasing accuracy. They will be expected to use their result to help report their findings drawing conclusion. COMPUTING We are Cryptographers learning how use written methods with increasing accuracy when working on multiplication and division. They will multiply and divide numbers up to 4 digits using formal written methods. When working with measures the children will learn how to convert between different units. We will be finding out about messages and commands are encoded by computers. We will be learning to: use semaphore messages; use Morse messages; use Caesar Cypher to write and crack codes and decrypt messages using the Caesar cipher. Design & Technology French Notre Monde (Our World) This half-term the children will be learning key vocabulary under the theme of ‘Our World’. They will be learning how to speak in simple sentences, describing holidays, weather patterns and countries. They will use these to write their own short sentences in French. RE Hinduism In RE we will be exploring the Hindu faith this half term, looking at celebrations, festivals and customs. We will be learning to explore how and why people celebrate in religions and explain how customs are similar or different between religions. Mechanisms This half-term the children will explore the use of cam mechanisms to make moving toys. They will develop their designing skills by using information sources to generate ideas and formulate an understanding of how cam mechanisms can be used to produce movement. The children will also extend their making skills by developing technique in cutting, shaping and joining.
