with a major in Finance, University of Nevada, Reno. Expected
date of graduation, May 2017. GPA (Only if 3.5/4.0 or higher)
EXPERIENCE
When describing work experience, show how your work
experience matches the job ad criteria.
 Yes, you must list all your jobs; but you do not need to explain
all your jobs. Only explain jobs that show how you fit the job
you are applying for.
 Use at least three bullet points, but no more than 5, to show
your skills.
 Start each sentence with a verb such as, “planned, organized,
maintained, etc.”
 There is no “I” used in résumé.
 Date range: month and year are always used, can be placed first
or last. If placed first, it emphasizes the time employed.
Location of work is optional. Position held or position title is
always first, and always bolded for emphasis. Place bullets
directly under position title.
 Be specific when describing job duties, use numbers. Turn into
accomplishment statements, not just a task. Example below:
June 2006-Present
Circus Circus
Reno, NV
Server
 Handle, on average, 45 tables per night, or approximately 212
customers.
 Ensure proper customer service by communicating with all
staff members.
Another example: Suppose you held a position as a Computer and
Internet Technician, and you decide to deemphasize your time
employed and remove the location.
Computer & Internet Technician IGT Aug 08-July 10
 Primary Duties: Computer repair and assembly, software
troubleshooter, Internet installation, and troubleshooting
games.
OR does the following show your skill set better?
 Assembled and repaired Dell, Compaq, and Gateway, and
other PC computers
 Analyzed and fixed software malfunctions for Windows
applications

Installed and debugged Internet systems for businesses such as
Rydells’ Sports, Apple Foods, and Eric Cinemas
Another example: You held positions as a Delivery person and
Shift Manager at the same company, in other words you were
promoted from Delivery to Management. See below for how to
handle promotions.
Shift Manager
Pizza Hut
July 09-Aug 10
 X
 X
Other positions held:
Delivery Person
Final example: Suppose you held a position as a bartender. After
careful consider, you have decided that nothing at the position
showcases a skill required in your job ad. Yes, you must list the
position, but you do NOT have to explain the position.
Bartender
COURSEWORK
Joe’s Pub
March 09-June 09
When using this heading, describe what you learned in the course.
 This is a description of “relevant” coursework only; not a list
of all courses taken.
 Describe a course by relating it to the job skills listed in the
advertisement.
 As most students do not have actual work experience in their
major, this heading is necessary to show the employer the skills
the student possesses.
 Do not use the course number, use the course title.
Example course shown below, notice how the course title is bolded
Financial Analysis: Learned how to calculate the Time of Value
Money, responsible for maintaining the accounts of 10 fictitious
clients and recommending proper investments for their portfolios.
QUALIFICATIONS This is a great heading you always include. You can use this
heading to relate your skills and it may be more appropriate
than a coursework section. Consider placing the skills you learned
in a course under this major heading. It does not matter where
you acquired the skills, but rather that you have them. Example:
 5 years customer service experience
 Proficient with Microsoft’s Office Suite of Products.
 Knowledgeable in accounts payable and receivables.
 Maintained 10 fictitious client accounts and recommended
proper investments for their portfolios.
Other headings you may want to consider: Feel free to combine two headings together;
especially, if you will only have one item listed under each heading.
 Awards
 Professional Organizations
 Relevant Skills or Qualifications. Your choice what word works for you.
 Languages
 Volunteer experience
 Certifications
Key Items to Remember
Purpose of a résumé is to secure a job interview.
Remember there is no such thing as a generic résumé: One size does not fit all!!
Remember the issue with spelling. ONE and DONE!!
Remember you are limited to one page only and the job ad MUST be attached showing
the skills you have that MATCH the ad.
Headings can be left or centered, but typically never aligned right.
The format should be pleasing to the eye; this is the first impression someone has of
you. Nothing busy or crowded, but simple and easy to read, and watch font size, nothing
smaller than 11.
Remember, no Word templates. Create your own so you don’t look like everyone else.
Remember bullets and bold are techniques to emphasize key items. Use these to draw the
reader’s eyes to important points.
You may place your “coursework”/“qualifications” before your “experience” section.
Your choice, but make your decision based on the job skills listed in your ad.
Finally, make sure everything you have on your résumé is showcasing skills the employer
is looking for in an employee. Everyone has skills they are proud of, but if they don’t fit
what the employer is looking for, do not include them. Remember the purpose is to get an
interview. In the interview, you can mention other key accomplishments.
