TEAMWORK
• Consists of many professionals with
different levels of education, ideas,
backgrounds, and interests working
together for the good of the patient.
• Who would be involved in a team for a
patient having surgery?
Characteristics of a
Powerful Team
Common Purpose
Every team must have a
common purpose or goal.
If everyone is not working
towards the same goal,
their work will be
ineffective producing
unexceptional results.
Clear Roles
Every person on the team
must understand the role
of each team member.
This means they should
understand the role of
themselves and everyone
on the team.
Accepted Leadership
A leader is an important
part of any team. The
leader is responsible for
organizing efforts,
encouraging opinions,
motivating team members,
and providing positive and
corrective feedback.
Accepted Leadership
Leaders should also allow
others to assume the
leadership role if they
know that another person
can handle a particular
situation more effectively.
Effective Processes
It is essential for a team to
deal with conflict and idea
sharing in a positive way.
Teams should try to
determine a way to solve
conflict in a cooperative
matter. Team members
should remain open to all
ideas suggested and
choose the best one based
on the possible outcomes
Solid Relationships
Members of a team will
consist of different
cultures, backgrounds,
genders, ages, beliefs,
levels of education, etc.
These affect the way
people think and react.
Members must be
sensitive to the feelings of
other team members and
respect their opinions.
Excellent Communication
Team members should
listen carefully when
another person is sharing
an idea or belief. Members
need to be open minded
and willing to compromise.
Avoid criticizing other
members.
Use the “Golden Rule!”
Legal Responsibilities
Each member of a team
must understand the legal
limitations of each
member. No team member
should perform or expect
another team member to
perform a duty that is out
of his or her scope of
practice.
Exceptional Results
When every member of a
team commits to the
teams common goal and
understands everyone’s
responsibilities, remains
open minded to the other
members, is respectful of
every member, and solves
conflict effectively the
common goal of the team
can be reached.
Unacceptable Results
If any step in the process
is broken down the team
will not be successful. This
could be a matter of life or
death in the health care
field.
