NATIVE PLANT AND SEED SOURCES This information is provided as a resource by the Washington Native Plant Society and does not imply any endorsement. For more information, suggested additions, or data changes, please contact WNPS at 206-527-3210 or [email protected]. The contacts listed here are posted on the WNPS web site with details from a survey describing the types of plant material stocked, the forms plants are available in, the focus of the firm, and services provided. Specialty Nurseries Some of these growers, nurseries and seed suppliers deal mainly in native plants. Others stock mostly non-natives, yet may also have a good selection of natives. Many specialize in plants for wetlands, alpine and rock gardens, or trees and shrubs. Some will harvest seed or grow plants under contract. Confirm before visiting. Many nurseries require an appointment and may not keep regular business hours. Use Local Native Plants Definitions of native vary from one grower to the next and may include cultivated varieties of native species, as well as plants from hundreds of miles away. For restoration and native habitat projects, it is usually best to use genetically varied stock originating from the nearest available natural sites. Local nurseries do not necessarily rely on local sources, nor is it always practical. Ask where a nursery’s propagation stock or plants come from before selecting plants for landscaping or restoration projects. SEEDS ONLY All Green Thumbs 1308 N. Please take care in selecting and planting “instant meadows.” Wildflower mixes for a given region may contain species from diverse ecosystems and states to provide a product where something will grow no matter what the habitat. Many mixes have been found to include invasive species or may include seeds for plants that are on the state’s quarantine and/or noxious weed lists, either as intentional flora or as contaminants picked during the harvest of desired seeds. See the Washington State Noxious Weed Control Board at www.wa.gov/agr/weedboard. More and more retail outlets are offering native plants. Some may stock a wide variety of natives and others may offer only a few species. As with all sources listed here, it is advised that buyers confirm the species requirements and propagation source when choosing native plants for home and commercial landscaping or restoration and habitat improvement projects. Planting the right plants in the sites and conditions they prefer with proper companions will not only contribute to the health and longevity of your plantings but also to the conservation and quality of water resources in your watershed. Information on selection, care, use, and wildlife benefits are available in the many references listed on our WNPS website. www.wnps.org Washington Native Plant Society-6310 NE 74th St., Suite 215E, Seattle, WA 98115 - 206 527-3210 - [email protected] – www.wnps.org 7/2/2009 Established in 1976 to appreciate, conserve and study our native flora.
