Songs & Rhymes – Lesson 5 – Five Frogs
Learning Outcome:
Students will learn some basic facts about frogs.
Students will learn the life cycle of a frog and some students will be able to re-tell the cycle,
using the appropriate vocabulary words.
Introduction to Topic:
Draw five items on the board (can be anything). Ask students to count how many. Write
number 5 and the word five on the board. Ask random students to bring you things from
around the room to total five. Count five children; etc. Ask students if they know any songs that
have 5 things; Make a list (5 Little Monkeys, 5 Little Ducks, 5 Little Speckled Frogs, 1,2,3,4,5,
etc.). Sing one of the songs – but not the frog one.
Put a picture of a frog on the board and elicit any information students can tell you about frogs
– food, habitat, appearance etc. Introduce the frog life cycle (Teacher Resource 2).
Sing Five Little Speckled Frogs – Teacher Resource 1.
Choose from the activities.
For an older group, get them to write the words for the Frog Life Cycle.
As an additional activity, talk about the letter F and identify some words that begin with F.
Students can then make their own letter F page with drawings/writing.
Main Activity:
1) Jump Frog – see attached craft – Teacher Resource 3. (OR choose one of the other

the frogs doing that activity and paste in the book. Can be enlarged to A3.

A frog is an amphibian. An amphibian can live both on land and in
water.
They lay their eggs in water. The eggs hatch into a tadpole which
lives in water until it becomes an adult frog.
Tadpoles look like fish. They have long finned tails and breathe
through gills.
Although frogs live on land they must be near swamps, ponds or in a
damp place. This is because they will die if their skin dries out.
Instead of drinking water, frogs soak it into their body through
their skin.
Frogs use their sticky, muscular tongue to catch and swallow food.
Frogs can see forwards, sideways and upwards all at the same time.
They never close their eyes, even when they sleep. Frogs also have
an amazing sense of hearing.
Frogs have very powerful back legs and webbed feet that help
them jump great distances, as well as, swim. Frogs even use their
legs to dig, or burrow, underground.
Frogs are carnivores - they eat meat. Small to medium sized frogs
eat insects such as flies, mosquitoes, moths and dragonflies. Larger
frogs will eat larger insects like grasshoppers and worms.
They come in many colors, patterns and sizes and a frog can change
the colour of its skin depending on its surroundings.
Every different species of frog makes its own special sound and it
is only the male frog that can croak. There are frogs that chirp,
whistle, croak, ribbit, peep, cluck, bark and grunt.
