data presented by .id. .id builds demographic information products for Australia & New Zealand and have created suburb-based community profiles to councils across Australia. Data presented in the community profiles are compiled from the most recent Census of Population and Housing, the largest statistical collection undertaken by the ABS. The objective of the Census is to accurately measure the number and key characteristics of people who are in Australia, and of the dwellings in which they live on Census Night. The most recent Census of Population and Housing was conducted on 9 August 2011. Overview Greater Geelong (C) – Pt C SLA Corio- Inner SLA Geelong West SLA Geelong SLA Bellarine – Inner SLA Newtown SLA South Barwon – Inner SLA Greater Geelong (C) – Pt B SLA Of the total LGA population of 217,574: 48.6 per cent were male and 51.4 per cent were female 89.6 per cent were Australian citizens with 79 per cent of these Australian born 15.9 per cent were born overseas, with 9.4 per cent from non-English speaking backgrounds 94.5 per cent of the municipality spoke English 1.5 per cent identified as speaking another language and English not so well, or not at all Italian and Croatian were the next most prevalent languages Christians accounted for 63.3 per cent of the municipality and 24.9 per cent reported having no religion. Education 41.6 per cent of the municipality had completed year 12 or equivalent (lower than the state average of 49.8 per cent). Across all SLAs, completion of year 12 was the highest reported level of schooling, except for in Greater Geelong (C) – Pt C where the highest percentage chose not to disclose. 20 per cent of the municipality had a vocational qualification (higher than the state average 16.4 per cent). SLAs Greater Geelong (C) – Pt C (14.9 per cent) and Newtown (15 per cent) 4 recorded the lowest percentages whilst Bellarine Inner (23.9 per cent), Greater Geelong (C) – Pt B (21.2 per cent) recorded the highest percentages. 15.7 per cent of the municipality had a bachelor degree or higher (lower than the state average 20.8 per cent). SLAs which recorded the lowest levels were Bellarine Inner (7.6 per cent), Corio (7.7 per cent) and Greater Geelong (C) – Pt C (8.9 per cent). Newtown recorded the highest at 29.8 per cent. 8.2 per cent of the municipality has an advanced diploma or diploma (lower than the state average 9.4 per cent). The SLA with the lowest rate of advanced diploma or diploma attainment was Corio Inner (5.7 per cent) and the highest was Newtown (10.4 per cent). Employment 94.4 per cent of people were employed (Victoria - 94.6 per cent). 5.6 per cent were unemployed (Victoria - 5.4 per cent) with the highest unemployment rate recorded in Corio Inner SLA (8 per cent). The highest percentages of employed people worked within ‘health care and social assistance’, ‘retail trade’ and ‘manufacturing’ and worked within ‘professional’, ‘technicians and trade’ and ‘clerical and administrative workers’ occupations. Disability 5.6 per cent had a disability that required assistance (higher than the state average of 4.8 per cent). People aged 85+ years of age accounted for most of the cases across all SLAs. Method of travel to work The majority of employed people (67.1 per cent) travelled to work by car (as the driver). The closer people lived to Geelong City, the more likely they were to walk to work with Newtown (6.1 per cent) and Geelong West (5.8 per cent) recording the highest percentages of walkers on the day. Cycling to work was not a popular option, even among SLAs close to Geelong City. Geelong (2.2 per cent), Geelong West (2 per cent) and Newtown (1.6 per cent) SLAs still recorded the highest percentages for people cycling to work on this day. Unpaid work The percentage of people reporting involvement in volunteering was slightly higher than the State average (18.5 per cent). A large percentage of people were involved in unpaid domestic work (70.9 per cent) which is slightly higher than in the state. The majority reported completing between 5 and 14 hours of work. 28.5 per cent reported providing unpaid childcare, in which 19 per cent of these were caring for their own child/ren (which was in line with the state and across all SLAs). Households The highest percentage of households were comprised of couples with children (28.3 per cent), followed by lone people households (26.5 per cent) and couples without children (26 per cent). Of households with children, there were more couples with children than single parent households (across all SLAs, and in line with the state). In the municipality, 28.3 per cent are couples with children and the remaining 11.5 per cent are single parent households. The highest percentage of households was classified within the lowest earning group, earning between $0 and $624 per week (29 per cent). This was followed closely by 27.1 per cent in the ‘medium to lowest’ group earning of $625 and $1213 per week. These were slightly higher than the state (25 per cent and 25 per cent respectively). 5 Most live in stand alone housing (84.5 per cent) or medium density housing (14.3 per cent). These percentages are similar across all SLAs and the state. The highest percentage reported owning their own home (35.2 per cent), followed by a mortgage (33.4 per cent) and renting (25.5 per cent). These percentages are similar across all SLAs and the state. More than 70 per cent of households have access to the internet (this is reflected across all SLAs and the state). Most households have access to 1 or 2 cars. This is reflected across all SLAs and the state. The highest percentage of people both live and work in the municipality (84.9 per cent).
