Got a question for Becky Lindley, Coordinator of Commuter Affairs and Leadership? Send it to [email protected] and your question may be featured in an upcoming edition of the Commuter Connections Newsletter! Hi Everyone! Since this is a new idea for an article, I thought I’d just send out a quick message to you about what I hope to accomplish. I would like people to e-mail me any questions they have about being a commuter or how to get involved as a leader on campus. I will do my best to give you helpful advice to be successful at Fitchburg State. Also, feel free to write in any feedback that you have about Commuter Affairs and I will comment on that as well. For now, I have a little advice for you about the rest of this semester, which is quickly coming to the end. I’m sure that you have many final papers and projects to worry about finishing… along with outside commitments, family, work, and more. Make sure to take care of yourself and get out to enjoy the nice weather when you can. Read or type on your laptop on your porch outside; take a break and walk around with your friends or kids or pets. When traveling back and forth to Fitchburg State, leave a little extra time for the commute – especially on Fridays. Everyone comes out from under their shells when the nice weather arrives to enjoy the sunshine…which always leads to more traffic on the roads. Lastly, make sure to take advantage of all the activities that are being offered for the end of the year. Spring week starts on April 30th and it will have activities all DAY as well as in the evening, so check them out while you’re here. It’s a great way to get a study break while getting to hang out with everyone! 2 lorem ipsum dolor issue, date Spotlight on a Commuter Student: Shayla “Razz” Beley! Hey guys! I am a 20-year-old sophomore majoring in Photography and Interactive Media with a minor in Romance Language. In my spare time, I like to long board, hoop, read, bake and watch films. I love to experience and learn new things. I love and really appreciate Commuter Affairs; you do so much for us as commuters! Commuter Affairs is always planning something new for us to be involved in which is fun, but also helps commuters feel welcome on campus. These events provide non-resident students with a real on-campus college experience. One type of event provided for commuters, which I really like are the free dinners at Holmes Dining Commons. Not only does this give us commuters a chance to eat on campus but more importantly, this allows commuters to socialize and catch up with friends. The same is true with the Commuter Conversation events, which are fantastic! Another set of events, which I greatly appreciate, are the volunteer opportunities offered. Volunteering has always been important to me because I love to help others but locating opportunities to get involved can sometimes be tricky. Hearing about volunteer opportunities through Commuter Affairs is really helpful because not only is information provided regarding the logistics of the event; it is also a group trip where we get to work as a team. I try to go to every Commuter Affairs event for the fun and also in appreciation of the efforts the office is dedicating towards helping commuters. I always try to let other commuters know when something is going on and I hope more students get involved! Another point, which I want to stress, is that everyone is welcome at these events, even resident students! I sometimes hear from noncommuter students that they are afraid to join in on some of the festivities because they think it is strictly a commuter event. However, although the events are geared towards commuters, they are also to integrate commuters into the Fitchburg State community, which includes residents! 3 lorem ipsum dolor issue, date Continued Check out the new North Street Bistro! In case you haven’t noticed, the Commuter Café has recently been renamed and relocated! The new, North Street Bistro is now located in the lower level of the Hammond Building, down the hall from our new campus bookstore. This conveniently placed café has a wide variety of new food options to choose from! It is open Monday through Thursday from 7:30 am to 10:00pm, Fridays 7:30am to 11:00pm, Sundays 3:00pm to 9:30 PM and is closed on Saturdays. According to commuter student Tyler Rubchinuk, there are some great items available from Subway including the Steak N Cheese and Spicy Italian subs! Over at BYOB (Build Your Own Burger), a new sandwich: the Memphis Burger was recently introduced. This burger is filled with pulled pork and is topped off with slaw, cheddar cheese, pickles and BBQ mayo, all for only $5.49! Have a sweet tooth? The Cannoli’s for $1.99 and Baklava with chocolate for $2.99 are a must try. Skipped breakfast? Don’t miss the most important meal of the day. Head downstairs and grab some cereal a muffin, bagel or English muffin! Worried about not being able to eat in between or before your next class? The Bistro has many items, which are readily available, and on the go including fruit, chocolate covered pretzels, snack mix, gummy bears malted milk balls, and more. Remember, any dining points that are left to spend in the North Street Bistro must be spent by the end of the year! They do not roll over so make sure to head down to the Bistro and try some of the new options while there is still time! COMMUTER ART SHOWCASE “Syd Barrett” by Jessica Whitley Painting by Samantha Boyle 4 lorem ipsum dolor issue, date Do you find yourself unfocused during the day? Do you have backto-back classes and getting a small bite to eat is nearly impossible? Looking for a quick and healthy alternative throughout the day that doesn’t take up a lot of space in your bag? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then homemade Trail Mix is just the fix you need! This quick and easily made snack is healthy and taste delicious too, not to mention inexpensive! Who wouldn't want that? QUICK FIX: TRAIL MIX! Ebony’s Recipe 1cup Almonds 1/2cup Dark Chocolate Bits 1cup unsalted seeds 1cup unsweetened fruit 1cup Oats. Substitute with 1/4cup of dark chocolate M&M's instead if desired. Enjoy and remember Moderation is Key! Not every "Trail mix" is healthy. Most consist of bad sugars that give you little to no healthy benefits. Creating your own mix is a great way of knowing exactly what you’re taking in and you can personalize it Ebony’syou recipe forlike. an on the go commuter! however would Remember though, moderation is key! - Almonds are a perfect source of energy, muscle building proteins and healthy monosaturated fats, which are needed for a healthy heart! Though, when adding these to trail mix try to stay away from salted almonds as they will increase thirst. -Who said Dark chocolate wasn’t good for you? Dark chocolate adds a little bit of sugar to the mix but also the necessary antioxidants the body needs. Though dark chocolate is good for you it has a very defined taste so adding a large amount isn’t what you want to do, unless you want to eat a bag of sugar. -Adding unsalted seeds also is a great way to add Omega 3 to your body considering the heart does not produce them. Omega3 are good for the heart but they are also great for the Brain and can potentially improve depression. -Unsweetened fruit is tasty and delicious. They also add necessary vitamins and minerals the body needs. -Oh Oh Oats? Oats are jam packed with fiber! They have been shown to help reduce cholesterol and protect the body from heart disease. Want an extra sweetness? Getting honey-flavored oats is a small way to sweeten up your trail mix without adding all the extra sugars and empty calories. 5 CONTACT INFORMATION Rebecca Lindley, Coordinator of Commuter Affairs and Leadership, can be reached at: [email protected] Josh Whipple, Commuter Affairs Lead, can be reached at: [email protected] Matthew Costello, Commuter Assistant, can be reached at: [email protected] Ebony Schuerman, Commuter Assistant, can be reached at: [email protected] Angela Szymcik, Commuter Assistant, can be reached at: [email protected] Additionally, you can always reach someone by emailing [email protected] The Fitchburg Activities Board Proudly Presents: "Spring Week 2012, Your Golden Ticket to Imagination and Fun!"
