INSTRUCTION AND ACTIVITIES: Preparation 1.Make one copy of the Enjoying Physical Activity worksheet for each student. Good Sport lesson 1.Beanbag game. a.The object of this game is to teach students good sportsmanship. Preface the game by asking the students if they think it is possible that anyone will ever miss catching the beanbag. Help them come up with things to say that would show good sportsmanship when someone does miss b.Directions i. This game may be played with the students sitting at their tables/desks. Toss the beanbag to any student to catch. The student will then toss the beanbag back to the teacher. While tossing the beanbag to different students, have them practice being a good sport by complimenting good catches or encouraging those students who miss ii. Continue to play catch with your students. Compliment any good sport behavior that you observe 2.Scenario a.Now have students imagine that they are on a sports team. The team is in the outfield. Here comes the beanbag, heading straight to the “catcher.” Oh, no! The “catcher” misses the beanbag...again. The game is over, and the team has lost. Ask students, “What would you say to the ‘catcher’ to make him feel better?” b.Give students a chance to make the “catcher” feel better. They could tell him or her that making a mistake is no big deal and that the important thing about a game is to have fun. Being angry at your teammates makes it less fun for everyone 3.Talk about it a.Talk to the students about winning and losing. • How does it feel to win? • How does it feel to lose? • If you have won a game, can you imagine how the losing side must feel? (continued) b.Talk about some things you can do or say as a winner: • “You played a really good game!” • “That was a close match, but maybe you’ll beat me next time.” c.Talk about some things you can do or say as a loser: • “Congratulations, you’re a really good player!” • “Amazing play! Let’s play again sometime.” • Explain that it’s not if you win or lose, it’s how you play the game.
