Most see food-borne illness on the increase
HIGHLIGHTS:
August 14th, 2012, Toronto – In a random sampling of public opinion taken by
the Forum Poll™ among Canadians 18 years of age and older, 7-in-10 opposed
the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in food products (71%).
Females were significantly more likely to opposed the use of GMOs (77%;
compared to 65% of males), as were those with a household income between
$20K and $60K (64% <$20K, 79% $20K-$40K, 75% $40K-$60K, 67% $60K-$80K,
70% $80K-$100K, and 62% $100K+), and those residing in Ontario, Quebec, and
British Columbia (75%, 72%, 72% respectively).
Of the minority who favoured the used of GMOs those aged 18-34 were
significantly more likely to favour their use in food when compared to older
Canadians (23% 18-34, 10% 35-44, 11% 45-54, 11% 55 to 64, and 13% 65+), as
were males (22%), those with a household income exceeding $100K (18% <$20K,
8% $20K-$40K, 14% $40K-$60K, 16% $60K-$80K, 18% $80K-$100K, and 28%
$100K+)
More than 8-in-10 want GMOs labelled
More than 8-in-10 Canadians believe foods containing GMOs must be clearly
labelled as such (84%).
Female Canadians were significantly more likely to think that GMO based food
should be clearly labelled (87%; compared to 81% of males), as were those with
a household income between $20K and $60K (77% <$20K, 89% $20K-$40K, 90%
$40K-$60K, 82% $60K-$80K, 84% $80K-$100K, and 77% $100K+), and those
residing in the province of Quebec (90%).

Older Canadians were significantly more likely to agree that food-borne illnesses
are on the rise (45% 18-34, 50% 35-44, 54% 45-54, 56% 55 to 64, and 58% 65+),
as were females (59%; compared to 44% of males), those with lower household
incomes (54% <$20K, 57% $20K-$40K, 54% $40K-$60K, 51% $60K-$80K, 56%
$80K-$100K, and 37% $100K+), and those residing in Ontario (56%).

Methodology
This Forum Poll™ was conducted by Interactive Voice Response (IVR) among a
randomly selected sample of 1,127 Canadians 18 years of age and older on
August 8th, 2012.
Results based on the total sample are considered accurate +/- 2.92%, 19 times
