.............................................................................................................. 20 4 Welcome to Maple Leaf School The staff is pleased to welcome all students and their parents to Maple Leaf School. The purpose of this handbook is to help you become familiar with the procedures and policies of our school. Please retain this book for future reference. We hope this handbook will cover the majority of questions which may arise. It is the desire of the staff to have open lines of communication with the home. Parents should always feel free to contact the school for clarification of issues or to address concerns. We wish all students an enjoyable and productive school year. Mr. Mike Keith Principal Mission Statement Maple Leaf School is dedicated to: • Working as a community to provide a safe, caring student-centred learning environment where diversity is celebrated; • Activating student learning in support of our children reaching their potential as creative, responsible, and contributing members of our democratic society; and • Working together as a staff to advance our capacity to improve student learning Motto ~ Learn, Grow, Live School Goal To provide students with tools to care for self, others and the environment. School Priorities Literacy Numeracy Social/Emotional Wellness E.S.D. (Environmental Sustainable Development) 5 “Bucket Fill-osophy” The Theory of the Dipper and the Bucket Each one of us has an invisible bucket. It is constantly emptied or filled, depending on what others say or do to us. When our bucket is full, we feel great. When it is empty, we feel awful. Each of us has an invisible dipper. When we use that dipper to fill other people's buckets ~ by saying or doing things to increase their positive emotions ~ we also fill our own bucket. But when we use that dipper to dip from others' buckets ~ by doing or saying things that decrease their positive emotions ~ we diminish ourselves. Like the cup that runneth over, a full bucket gives us a positive outlook and renewed energy. Every drop in that bucket makes us stronger and more optimistic. But an empty bucket poisons our outlook, saps our energy, and undermines our will. That's why every time someone dips from our bucket, it hurts us. So we face a choice every moment of every day: We can fill one another's buckets, or we can dip from them. It's an important choice ~ one that profoundly influences our relationships, productivity, health, and happiness. Bucket-Filling Curriculum Goals To teach children how to reach out and express love, respect, and appreciation to others. To help children to become "other-centered" rather than "self-centered". To help children express their feelings (good and bad) in a healthy manner. To help children understand where feelings originate and how to protect their feelings from being hurt. To establish a framework for more constructive words and actions and less bullying. To create more positive home and school environments 6 Families and School: Shared Responsibility for Students Structuring opportunities for students to learn and creating conditions for the best learning of students is the primary role of teachers. There are many reasons for student’s progress in school. Student’s optimum success is dependent on teacher, instructional, home, peer and student characteristics. The school and home are the important environments for student development and educational success. Both in- and out-of-school time are related to positive performance outcomes for students in school. Thus, both families and teachers are essential to enhancing opportunities for students to learn and for creating conditions for peak learning for students. There are two curricula for students: the curriculum of the school and the curriculum of the home. Ideal student performance depends on what teachers do. The curriculum of the school includes such factors as: an appropriate instructional level for the student high teacher expectations sufficient practice opportunities ensuring students complete schoolwork with a high degree of success. Ideal student performance depends on what families do. The curriculum of the home includes such factors as: high parent expectations structuring time for studying/homework modeling a positive attitude toward school providing support for students’ learning Ideal student performance depends on the active involvement of students in learning and WE know this is best accomplished with the mutual support of teachers and families. Finally the relationship between families and school is an essential ingredient for the student success. Student success is the highest when families and teachers form a partnership to enhance learning opportunities. Partnership means teaming or a common effort toward a shared goal. The key is to have families and teachers “reading from the same page” about ways to enhance students’ academic, social and behavioral growth. Therefore, ongoing, twoway communication between school and home about ways to help students be successful learners is essential. At Maple Leaf Elementary School, we believe in creating partnerships with families for student success. We know that, together, we can accomplish more than either the family or school can alone. This year there will be many opportunities to get involved to share your ideas. We urge you to take advantage of these to provide the best education for our students. Together We’re Better! 7 Home and School Association Welcome Parents The Home and School Association is an organization involved in bringing the parent perspective to the education of their children. The first meeting of this organization will be on Monday, September 12th at 7:00 in the school staff room. Meeting agendas are in the monthly newsletter. This is a great way to be a part of your child’s life at school. See you there! Volunteers Maple Leaf School welcomes volunteers. All volunteers are required to sign in at the Main Office and wear a volunteer badge while volunteering in our school. Western School Division Policy states that all volunteers must have criminal record and child abuse registry checks completed prior to volunteering in schools. Both checks are free of charge and can be initiated through Western School Division Office. If you have had the checks completed for Western School Division in the previous year, please complete the volunteer offence declaration form available at the school office. This is an opportunity for you to be involved at Maple Leaf School. Everybody wins when we spend energy and time together supporting learning! 8 Daily Time Schedule 8:30 -8:50 a.m. – OUTDOOR SUPERVISION 8:50 a.m. – 1st bell 8:50 a.m. - Period 1 9:21 a.m. - Period 2 9:57 a.m. - Period 3 10:33 a.m. – OUTDOOR RECESS 10:48 a.m. - Period 4 11:24 a.m. - Period 5 12:00 -12:30 p.m. - LUNCH TIME 12:30 – 12: 55 p.m. – OUTDOOR RECESS 1:00 p.m. - Period 6 1:36 p.m. - Period 7 2:12 p.m. – OUTDOOR RECESS 2:27 p.m. - Period 8 3:03 p.m. - Period 9 3:40 p.m. – DISMISSAL 3:47 busses leave school grounds Doors to use ALL Kindergarten – McGill, Routhier, Unrau ….. All programs follow the curriculum developed by Manitoba Education. Grades K to 4 English stream students also receive instruction in Early Start and Basic French. Religious Exercises Since June 1992 it is no longer legal for schools in Manitoba to have mandatory religious exercises. Each school must be petitioned each year by a sufficient number of parents to request that such exercises take place. Religious exercises may only be conducted when a petition asks for religious exercises and is signed by 60 parents/guardians. This is an opt-in process. When offered, students who have received parental permission meet in the Music Room by 8:45 a.m. for a Bible story and the Lord's Prayer and then return to their classrooms. Any parents/guardians who want their child(ren) to be part of this must send a note to the school once the petition has been approved by the school board. In the note please indicate that permission has been granted for your child(ren) to attend these exercises, your child’s name, grade, and teacher, and please sign your name and date the note. Student Reports Student progress reports are sent home three times a year (November, March, and June). Student led conferences are held in November and March. 12 Attendance All students are expected to attend school regularly and to arrive at school by the first bell @ 8:50 a.m. If a child is late for school, we ask that he/she check in at the office before proceeding to class. Please contact the school by phone (204-822-4458), or send a note with your child if you know in advance that he/she will absent or will be leaving early. If you prefer to email your child’s teacher about an upcoming absence, please send a copy of that email to the office ([email protected] and [email protected]) If a parent/guardian wishes to pick up a student during school hours, we ask that you check in at Central Office to sign your child out. Safety Call-back System The Safety Call-back System is designed to ensure the safe arrival of each student at the school. If a child is absent and the parents/guardians have not informed the school of the child’s' whereabouts, the teacher notifies the office and a phone call goes home. Early Closings During the school year a number of workshops are scheduled to provide staff members with time to discuss and develop the curriculum and programming for students. Dismissal time on these days is 2:10 p.m. Please consult the school year calendar for additional information. The following dates are Early Dismissal for the upcoming year: September 21, 2016 October 19, 2016 November 23, 2016 January 18, 2017 February 15, 2017 April 19, 2017 May 17, 2017 June 28, 2017 Photographs Individual photographs are taken of children each year as a service to parents. Please contact the school office for additional information. After School Arrangements Both your child's teacher and bus driver need to know if there is a change in your usual after school plan. Please send a note to school. This prevents unnecessary concerns. Students are dismissed at 3:40 on regular school days and at 2:10 on early dismissal days. To help alleviate any unnecessary anxiety in your child’s life, please make every effort to pick your children up on time. Office Check-In During school hours, all guests and visitors to the school and/or playground are asked to report to the office. Office Hours The school office is open from 8:10 a.m. until 4:10 p.m. The office is open throughout the lunch hour. Student Drop-off/Pick-up Zones Student safety during arrival times and at dismissal times will always need to be addressed by Maple Leaf parents, teachers, and students. The following procedures need to be followed to ensure the safety of our children, students, and teachers: Load and/or unload students in the 11th Street loop. For student safety, please drive in, drop off and drive out of the loop. Always proceed cautiously, and keep the line moving. There is no parking in the 11th Street Loop. If you need to come into the school, please park in the parking area designated for visitors on the southwest side of our school off of 12th Street or on the street adjacent to the school grounds. Reserved parking directly west of the school is for staff only. The bus parking lot off of Wardrop and 12th Street must be kept clear and is for bus use only for the majority of the day. Parents may park in this lot from 10:00-2:00 only. Visitor parking is available on the south end of the school just off of 12th Street AND in the empty lot on the corner of Thornhill Street & 11th Street. Note: The staff parking lot directly west of the main doors is reserved for staff only. This lot is not a drop-off zone. There will be a pylon placed at the entrance of the staff parking lot -ONLY staff is permitted to drive into this parking lot. 14 City of Morden – Wardrop Sreet. Bike Route Project: The City of Morden has designated Wardrop Street between Morden Park and 5th St. as a bike route – there will be no parking available on Wardrop Street. Crossing Guards are located at the intersection of 11th Street and Thornhill Street in the morning, at noon, and at the end of the school day, and at the corner of 12th Street and Wardrop in the morning and at the end of the day, to help students across these streets. Please remind your children to cross the streets using the help of our Crossing Guards. Please exercise great patience while waiting for your child. Extracurricular Activities A number of programs are offered to students outside the regular class times. These programs may vary from year to year depending upon demand. The programs are designed to bring together groups of students with common interests and to expose them to activities that may lead to participation and learning over the years. Some examples are: activities that allow students to pursue interests in the arts through the grades three and four Volunteer Choir programs involving students in grades three and four in sports through the intramural program opportunities to provide "community service" to the school and to students through conflict managers, service projects and the recycling committee. In addition classroom teachers frequently involve their students in community projects that emphasize the connection between what we learn in school and how we make use of this knowledge in the community. 15 Clothing Suitable To Weather Students are asked to wear clothing to receive maximum protection from rain, snow and cold. Warm winter clothing, boots, hats and mitts are especially essential for bus riders during the cold season in case of bus breakdowns. Students go outside for recesses. When the wind chill is -27oC or colder, we may keep students inside. This decision is reviewed frequently during the day. Bicycles Students who bring bicycles to school are required to park them in the bicycle racks provided. Kindergarten – McGill, Routhier, Unrau Gr. Parents have the primary responsibility for sick or injured students and are requested to follow these recommendations for keeping a child home. If a child shows signs or symptoms of a communicable disease during the school day, the school will contact parents to pick up their child and seek a medical opinion. Fever and/or vomiting in the last 24 hours. Signs of contagious diseases such as pink eye, impetigo, and strep throat. Children should not attend school until they have been treated with antibiotics and should remain home until they are on medication for 24 hours. Chicken pox. Children should stay home from school if they are too sick to participate in school activities, if they have a fever, or if the fluid-filled blisters have not completely dried over. Head lice: Children must be treated once, and re-treated seven days after the first treatment, with an approved shampoo/conditioner (check with your pharmacist) before returning to school. Nits (eggs) should be removed on a daily basis. Children may return to school after the first treatment has been completed and as many nits as possible removed. Any time your child shows signs of illness that may be passed to other children. Please report all communicable diseases to the school office. Communicable diseases include, but are not limited to: chicken pox, pink eye, flu, impetigo, head lice, scabies, measles, mumps, whooping cough, ring worm, strep throat, mononucleosis, fifth disease, hand-foot-mouth disease and scarlet fever. 16 Medication at School Western School Division Policy states that all medications to be administered to students during school hours must have prior written authorization by the parent/guardian. This includes prescription and over the counter medications. Whenever possible, parents should make arrangements with their physician to have medications administered outside of school hours. Parents/guardians shall deliver the child’s medication to the school office in the original pharmacy container and in the proper dosage. (The provision of an extra pharmacy label is recommended.) Parents need to complete the proper paperwork authorizing school personnel to administer the medications each year. PLEASE DO NOT SEND ANY MEDICATION WITH YOUR CHILD IN THEIR BACKPACK! Elementary Guidance Services Maple Leaf Guidance Services have three basic goals: 1. To support students who are having difficulty in school as a result of emotional or social issues. 2. To provide a developmental classroom guidance program that fosters the academic, personal, social and emotional development of all students. 3. To consult with teachers, parents and school and community professionals in order to plan for children's needs. The guidance counselor meets and welcomes new students, does presentations in classrooms, and also works with students in small groups and on an individual basis. A request to have your child see the guidance counselor to assist with concerns like anger, anxiety, behavior, friendship, feelings, family changes, loss, etc. can be made by teachers, principal, parents or students themselves. An outside referral to another professional may be recommended for ongoing issues. Small groups are formed when several students can benefit from learning more about topics like friendship, social skills, and anger management. Parents will be notified when their child will be involved in a small group or will be seeing the counselor individually. If you have questions or concerns you can contact our Guidance Counselor, Mr. Geoff Sutton, by leaving a message with the school office at 822-4458 anytime during the school day. 17 School Allergies and Scent Sensitivities Maple Leaf School is an allergy aware school. This year our school has several classrooms with children who have severe, and sometimes life threating allergies (anaphylaxis). The allergens are: eggs – any egg product (cooked or uncooked), nuts, peanuts, tree nuts, cashews, pistachios, fish and shellfish. The school and the children’s parents take active roles in managing the allergies but also need your help concerning the children’s safety. Actions you can take in helping to keep these children safe are: - avoid sending these foods to school with your children (eg. cookie/muffin/cake with egg in it, granola bars, peanut butter...); avoid using scented products or use them sparingly; read labels carefully; encourage your children to wash their hands regularly, particularly before coming to school and after petting an animal; and talk with your children about the serious nature of these allergies and the importance of helping to take care of each other. We thank you for your cooperation in helping to keep the children safe. For the benefit of those with allergies and sensitivities please refrain from wearing perfumes, colognes and other scented products. Lunch Time In order to provide the best environment for our students, town students who live within a reasonable walking distance of the school are expected to go home for lunch whenever possible. Students should return to school as close to 12:50 p.m. as possible. Three exceptions to this rule are: Hot Lunch Days (Hot Dog, Pizza, Chicken Finger and Sub days) Noon-hour activities (Intramurals, Noon Choir, We Group, etc.) Extremely cold/rainy weather We do allow students to stay if it is necessary. We expect students staying for lunch to spend at least 25-30 minutes playing outside getting some fresh air (depending on the weather). In most cases, this is the same amount of time required for students to walk home and back to school. Western School Division offers Chicken Fingers/veggie plate to students staying for lunch every Week 3—Thursdays at a cost of $5.00 (please refer to your Maple Leaf School monthly calendar for the dates each month). Students need to pre-order 2 days prior to Chicken Fingers Day (Every week 3—Tuesdays). Please send correct change with your child when ordering. Milk Orders Students can purchase milk tickets through the office, which they then can use to order white milk or chocolate milk for lunch. Milk tickets are sold in sheets of 12 and cost $10.00 per sheet (Prices are subject to change during the year.). Milk orders are placed through the classroom teacher before 9:30 a.m. and are delivered to the students at lunchtime. (Note: Milk tickets are not accepted for the Home & School Hot Lunch Program). 18 Newsletter and Calendar Newsletters will be emailed to all parents who have indicated their email addresses on the letter of consent included in your child’s registration package. If you have not given us an email address, or if your email address changes during the school year, please call the office to update your information. The newsletter will be emailed to your home at the beginning of each month, beginning in October. All families will receive a paper copy of the calendar each month and this will be sent home with the youngest child in the family. Our newsletter and calendar are also posted on the school website at the beginning of each month (www.westernsd.mb.ca/mapleleaf.). School Assemblies Assemblies open to the public are held at the end of each month. Please watch the calendar for times and dates. Code of Conduct Please visit the Maple Leaf School website to view the Code of Conduct document (www.westernsd.mb.ca/mapleleaf). Storm Days If unacceptable weather and road conditions develop overnight that makes travel by school buses unsafe a decision is made by 7:00 AM, when possible, to cancel buses and classes. This decision is relayed to 88.9 FM, CFAM 950, CFYI 93.5, CBC 990, and CJOB 680. Buses may also be cancelled due to low temperatures (-35oC) or high wind chill values (at or below -45oC Wind Chill Index). When all bus routes are cancelled, all Kindergarten to Grade 12 classes are also cancelled for that day. If unacceptable weather and road conditions develop during the school day where classes are already in progress, classes will continue and evening bus routes will be cancelled and rural students will be billeted in town. Since rural students are already in town rural bus service may not be available the following morning. For more information on the WSD storm policy: http://www.westernsd.mb.ca/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=111:transport ation&catid=212&Itemid=107&showall=&limitstart=4 19 Have a Concern?
