THIS PAST WINTER, 2013-2014... GROWERS PROVED HOW THESE ARE THEIR STRONG OW PLUS IS! STORIES. 14 The Ivy Farm - March 20 “We were apprehensive towards 3 mil poly after having a bad batch from another vendor a few years ago. My A.M. Leonard rep convinced me to give the 3 mil Overwinter Plus a try. After this windy winter, we are sold on its strength and durability. We did not lose one piece of poly. Even the local deer population will tell you it’s tough stuff. Yes, we had a few of those try to break into our houses... which we all know when poly gets tattered, that’s a good place for the wind to catch into and start ripping off the poly. That did not happen. With all of that in mind, two words best describe the Overwinter Plus poly. Strength and Durability.” – Art Thornton | The Ivy Farm “The summer of 2013 I was asked to trial the 2.5 mil OW Plus poly from Ginegar for the winter of 2013-14. Had I known what the winter was going to be like… (bitter cold, numerous high wind events coupled with several significant snow loads, and some freezing rain to boot), I probably would have declined. It was a very limited trial comparing the 2.5 mil OW Plus with my typical 3.0 mil OW poly that I have been purchasing from Ginegar for years. Only one 720ft x 17.5ft cold frame was covered with the remaining 150 cold frames receiving the standard cover. The cold frame selected was in our most wind prone location. I must say I was pleasantly surprised by its performance. There was no appreciable difference between the durability of the 2.5 mil OW Plus and the standard 3.0 mil OW poly. What will I do going forward? Such a limited trial is insufficient evidence for me to completely make the switch, but I will definitely be expanding the trial next year and potentially years to come.” – Paul Van Oteghem, VP of Production | Home Nursery, Illinois “Our 40 overwinter hoop houses are subject to a heavy wind load all winter and spring due to our location on the High Plains of Eastern New Mexico. In the past we have had a few minor problems with small tears where the plastic was attached to an edge or stress point. This year has been average in wind velocity and number of storms but we have had no stress tears whatsoever. When we start selling the plants out of the hoop houses we cut at least two small oval doors on the downwind side to allow us easy access to empty the 186' long houses. This year we have cut door openings on the downwind side of a number of houses and yet we have not had a single tear even near our door cuts. My conclusion is that the new 3 mil plus overwinter plastic is as good as, or superior to, any overwinter plastic we have used.” – Wes Harris | Harris Wholesale Nursery Inc. New Mexico “A.M. Leonard's Overwinter Plus Film is simply the best poly in the industry. They are extremely price competitive with a better quality plastic than we have used in past years. The conditions that we experienced this past year were some of the worst, with extreme high winds and our share of snow. Still the Overwinter Plus performed much better in those conditions than other poly from AM Leonard's competition. In the past, we were losing our plastic, and this year we had minimal issues with even our worst houses to cover. I plan on using A.M. Leonard's Overwinter Plus on all of our houses this year.” Hernie Rosado Production Manager Ridge Manor Nursery LLC Madison, OH 1-888-558-8665 amleo.com "We have been using Ginegar’s 3mil over winter poly for years on our hoop houses with great results and we are very excited about the performance of the 2.5mil poly we have tested. This winter [2013-2014] has had its challenges with extreme cold, high winds, and a wide range of snow cover. The 2.5mil poly has held up to everything this winter had to offer and then some." — Bill M. | Klyn Nurseries, March 2014 Perry OH “We tested your AM Leonard 3 mil Overwintering Plus plastic this last winter and found that it held up equally with the rest of our 4 mil plastic. It was easy to handle, covered easily, durable and took all the cold, snow and wind this winter had to offer. I will be interested in using more of this 3 mil plastic in the winters to come.” – Peter Scarff | Scarff’s Nursery, Inc. New Carlisle OH “Our operation has 15 overwintering nursery structures which we cover every year. Over the years we have tried poly from several manufacturers, and various weights and formulations. Last fall we covered all 15 in OW Plus poly, ranging from 14ft x 135ft to 21ft x 130ft. We normally have some pretty rough winter weather with brutal winds and ice, and this past winter was pretty tough. I’m happy to report that where we normally expect to lose two or three coverings during the course of a winter, this year we did not lose any, and only incurred a few minimal ice slices, which did not appreciably spread or tear afterwards. All structures remained covered with their original poly the full winter…An excellent product designed to withstand the rigors of winter exposure, while protecting your valuable product, and giving you peace of mind on windy nights.” – Todd M. | Rich Farms Nursery, Pennsylvania “The strength of the product does seem up to the standards of the thicker plastic we normally use, and it was easy to work with. The only negative we can point out is that it seems to expand and contract with temperature fluctuations more than our regular product. It was put on tight by our guys during a chilly (but not freezing) day. In the cold, the product remains very tight against the framework of our houses, however on a warmer day in the sun there is enough slack for it to noticeably flap against the houses. This has not caused any problems, nor do we expect it to, though I might be a little worried if we get a particularly windy day. Overall, we are satisfied with the product, especially with the affordable price tag it comes with compared to other thicker 4 mil plastics. It is also worth noting that we were provided with helpful and honest service by A.M. Leonard, and our order arrived in a timely fashion right when you said it would.” – Kris | Spring Gardens Nursery, New Jersey “This has been one of the hardest winters [2013-2014] on record here in central Indiana! This past fall we used a new product to cover our poly houses, Overwinter Plus. The performance of this product has been excellent! We cover about 100 poly houses and it is not unusual to have some poly trouble with the high winds and up and down temperatures we see. This past winter using this new type poly we have had no problems.” – Blue Grass Farms, Indiana “The windstorm we had in the beginning of January [2014] was a true test. It took us to 25 degrees below zero, and the winds were stronger than anything in recent memory. Everything held up fine…We will be ordering again next year.” – JJ, Virginia “The 3 mil Plus film performed as well as the regular 4 mil we used in previous years.” – Kristen C, | Hidden Lake Nursery New Jersey “We have found that the Overwinter Plus material is stronger than anything else out there. The competitive price and quick delivery are added bonuses.” – Soules Garden, Indianapolis, IN "We have always ordered the 4mil overwinter poly and this year we tried the 3mil OW+ and were very happy. This winter's weather was a little more severe than usual here in MI, and every house survived. We will definitely order the OW+ again". – Tom Kluck | Kluck Nursery Saginaw MI “I wanted to let you know that the 2.5mil overwinter plus white poly that we got from you that we tried out this year performed great. We are very happy with the results. The 2.5ml white poly did great, strength-wise with the 12 inches of snow that accumulated. It did just as well as the [standard] 5 mil. I will be buying it again this year.” – Agustin Leos | Gold Hill Sales 1-888-558-8665 | amleo.com
