Sun Safety and Protection Policy
Purpose:
The purpose of this policy is to provide a policy as part of Sinai College
Prep Prep’s written processes about how the school will respond to
sun care and protection.
Scope:
Students and employees, including full-time, part-time, permanent,
fixed-term and casual employees, as well as contractors, volunteers and
people undertaking work experience or vocational placements at Sinai
College Pre Prep

Policy Statement
Sun exposure increases the risk of skin cancer and Ultra Violet Rays can pose significant risks
that include sunburn, skin cancer, melanoma, eye damage, dehydration and heat stroke. At
the same time play and outdoor exploration is an important part of student learning. Sensible sun protection is required to allow children to play outdoors while minimising any risk of
sun damage.
Implementation
To minimise the risk of sun damage:
• Children, staff and visitors must wear clothing that provides adequate sun protection
• Exposed skin will have sunscreen applied
• Students, staff and visitors must wear broad brimmed or bucket hats that protect the
face, neck, ears and crown of the head when outside
• Parents/guardians must provide a suitable hat for their child daily
• The school will have spare (laundered) hats available
• Staff will ensure children without hats only play in shaded outdoor covered areas or indoors
• Staff will encourage children to play under shaded areas
• Sinai College Pre Prep will provide outdoor spaces that comply with legislation and provide shaded areas for children and educators
• Children, staff and visitors are encouraged to wear sun glasses that comply with Australian and New Zealand Standards
• Staff, visitors and students will apply 50+ SPF broad spectrum and water resistant sunscreen every two hours
• Sunscreen must be stored in a cool place and inaccessible to children when not in use
• Material Safety Data Sheets must be provided for each sunscreen brand
Sunscreen Authorisation
• Parents/Guardians are asked to provided authorisation for educators to apply sunscreen
to their child.
• Sunscreen must only be applied to a child where the service has obtained written permission/consent of the child’s parent/guardian
Ultra Violet Radiation
The risks of UVR must be assessed and managed by a completed risk management assessment for any activity that takes place outdoors during peak UVR time.
Hydration
Sinai College Pre Prep will provide access to clean drinking water throughout the day. Parents are encouraged to provide their child with a water bottle. Staff will monitor children’s
fluid intake throughout the day.
Communication of Policy
This policy will be shared with families on the school website and through the school newsletter from time to time. Educators will incorporate sun protection strategies through the
learning program.
