Hello, my name is Tammo Schoch. I’m 18 years old, currently a volunteer for IMSO and I work together with my colleague Cemal in the cyber café in the NMSC. I’m from Oldenburg which is a quite big town in north-west Germany. Oldenburg has approx. 160.000 inhabitants an is very flat: It is located only four meters above sea-level (which is not surprising since it is only 90km to the open sea). The closest bigger city is Bremen, which is about 50 kilometers east of Oldenburg. Unfortunately Oldenburg isn’t the best town for sightseeing since big parts of the town burnt down in 1676. Nevertheless there are some sights, e.g. the “St.Lambertikirche” (St Lambertchurch) which exists since the 11. Century and is with 86m the highest building of the city or the “Pulverturm” (“powder-tower”) which was part of the town walls and is one of the last parts of it which is not destroyed. There are several reasons why I came here for the voluntary work: After finishing high school I didn’t want to go to university directly, so I started searching for possibilities to work somewhere as a volunteer. As I thought about studying in Belgium or the Netherlands I was looking for a place where I could learn Dutch. In Germany I found a great organization which helped me with all the forms etc. I applied to IMSO and shortly after I had my affirmation that I was chosen. My project started on the 19th July 2012 and will end on the 18th July 2013. Since then my Dutch is improving day by day and I made great friendships with patients but also other Belgians and masses of other volunteers from all over Europe. I really enjoy my work in the clinic and I’m looking forward to getting to know more patients. Sincerely, Tammo Schoch .
