Vancouver Guide—Fast Food Restaurant #12:
Larry’s Lucky Lunches—
143 West 4th Avenue
Come to Larry’s between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
for the best vegetarian lunch you’ll have all
year!
It’s time to start taking a closer look at what
we eat… but it’s not time to slow down. You
need your lunch served hot, fresh, and most of
all, fast. And you also want fast food that
won’t put you in an early grave (i.e., you
don’t want McDonald’s). Larry’s Lucky
Lunches gives you what you want—fast and
healthy food! How can we do this, you ask?
教師版
It’s simple—Larry’s vegetarian food is 100%
organic. Only natural vegetable oils are used
in our cooking, and even those are used
sparingly! Healthful food doesn’t mean our
food is boring or that your options are limited.
No way, José! If anything, we have more
choices of (veggie) burgers, sandwiches, and
salads than any other fast food joint… yes,
even more than that monster of the modern
age—McDonald’s! Run, don’t walk, to
Larry’s Lucky Lunches today!
NOTE: One out of every twenty customers at
Larry’s Lucky Lunches receives a $10 meal
voucher. We don’t call our lunches “Lucky” for
nothing!
— Larry

do?

High IQ Test Scores Lead…
Nowhere
(AP) A long-term study, conducted by
the Massachusetts Board of Education, has
revealed some surprising results—namely,
that IQ tests do not, in any way, predict future
success.
While it has long been known that there
is absolutely no direct correlation between
traditional IQ scores and measurements of
future success (job earnings, social status,
personal satisfaction, etc.), it had been the
2

general consensus that young students
demonstrating high IQs were more likely than
others to achieve highly in the future. Yet the
Massachusetts Board’s 20-year research
project has concluded that no such correlation
exists. Middle school students whose IQs
were in the average range (about 90 to 110)
were equally “successful” twenty years later
when compared to those students whose
scores were above average (higher than 110).
Critics of these results point out that the
more inclusive education system of today has
already compensated for the differences in
natural intelligence between students; that is,
they suggest that if the study had focused on
students outside the public school system, it
would reveal the greater advantage of a higher
IQ. Nevertheless, since over 90% of
Massachusetts’ school-age teens attend public
school, it would appear that such a criticism is
largely irrelevant.
“The reason for this apparent paradox,”
says Education Minister John Mayfield, “is
that the educational and professional
structures of today depend much more on
social, creative, and emotional intelligences
than did the structures of the past, when these
IQ tests were created.”
29. ( B ) What is meant by “direct
correlation”?
A. Strong opinion.
B. Clear relationship.
C. Real purpose.
D. Simple truth.
30. ( D ) What point does the writer make in
paragraph three?
A. The critics have an excellent point.
B. Public education determines results.
C. There is great advantage to a higher IQ.
D. The criticisms are not very important.
31. ( C ) Based on his quotation, what is the
Education Minister trying to do?
A. Imagine different types of intelligence.
B. Determine the reason for the mistake.
C. Account for the surprising results.
D. Disagree with the writer of the article.
Questions 32-34
With all the advances being made in
science, and in particular in the fields of
genetics and DNA-mapping, it is tempting to
imagine a future where humans will live to be
教師版
much older than we do nowadays. At this
moment, there are scientists somewhere
working carefully on tests of stem cells, with
the goal of someday extending the life of a
human to supernatural levels. With all the
optimism this brings, there is the inevitable
question: should we focus on living longer, or
living better?
We ought to focus, perhaps, not on a
longer life, but a fuller one. Will science
allow us to do so? There is no doubt that
many of us owe our lives to science; the
advent of inoculations, the eradication of
diseases like smallpox, and the better healing
we enjoy from minor illnesses are all positive
results of science on humans’ standard of
living. There is, however, a great difference
between living (a good thing) and simply
being alive (not so good). In the latter case, an
elderly person may be stuck in bed for 20
years, barely able to move or think. Science
keeps this person alive longer, but not
everyone wants to live in such a condition. If
we take care of ourselves today, then we may
not need science to help us to live to a ripeold age.
32. ( A ) With which statement would the
writer probably agree?
A. There are more important things to worry
about than living longer.
B. Science should be responsible for
extending our lives.
C. It is too difficult for people to deal with
growing old and dying.
D. For the sake of God, we should all forget
about scientists’ work.
33. ( C ) What two basic things are compared
by the writer?
A. Inoculations and healing.
B. Scientists and regular people.
C. Length of life and quality of life.
D. Smallpox and minor illnesses.
34. ( B ) What is meant by “the latter case”?
A. Ideas that come too late.
B. The second of two examples.
C. People who are very old.
D. Healing from illnesses.

Hey y’all,
This is Dixie, an old friend to some of you,
and a family member to others. Most of you
haven’t seen me for years and that’s probably
a good thing. I really miss you, but if you saw
me today you might wish that you hadn’t. My
hair is dirty and my teeth are rotten; I haven’t
had a shower in over a week. To be honest
with you, I look like hell.
So, what happened to me? You’ve heard
some of the stories, no doubt – about how I
lost my job at the chocolate plant, got together
with a good-for-nothing man, and hit the road
for months at a time, not calling family or
friends. Yes, that all happened. I was so
foolish back then. After my years on the road,
I had no husband, no money, lots of debts,
and no real family relationships to fall back
on. I ended up living nowhere, alone in the
big city. For these past five years, I’ve been
living on the streets. I’ve used drugs, sold
everything I could find to sell, and learned to
survive by my wits. But it’s been so hard.
Last week, I decided to get my life back on
track. That’s why I’m at the library, and that’s
why I’ve gotten this email account. I now feel
that I am able to change myself—and change
others. I want people to know what can
happen to good people like me who are left
alone and desperate. I want to see all of you
again, as soon as possible, and I want to reenter society. I’m going to do all of this for
one reason: to teach others about what
happened to me. Maybe, if I share my stories,
other people won’t end up sharing my fate.
More later… my free 30 minutes are over,
and I still have nowhere to live!
Mom, I love you!

poop-produced in the year 2015.
