FIRST FLIGHTCORP. 6810 Curran St. San Diego, CA 92154 (619) 661-6522 JULY 2017 Thoughts from Tom We would like to take this time to remind you that we are here to provide you with quality service and information about Pilot Certifications, Aircraft Rental and Aircraft Maintenance. Aerobatic courses now available Levels of turbulence By Alton K. Marsh - AOPA’s Flight Training Magazine Turbulence is classified as light, moderate, severe, and extreme. Light turbulence may cause slight, rapid bumpiness without affecting aircraft altitude or attitude. “Light chop” is bumpier than light turbulence, but not bad enough to be called moderate. You can report either light turbulence or light chop, depending on severity. Moderate turbulence may change the aircraft’s altitude or attitude but the aircraft remains in control. Unsecured objects may be dislodged. (Caps on the coffee cups!) You’ll feel a definite strain against your seatbelt. “Moderate chop” is meaner than moderate, but not as mean as severe turbulence. Severe turbulence may cause large changes in attitude and altitude. There can be large changes in indicated airspeed. The aircraft may be momentarily out of control. There is no “chop” when you get to severe turbulence. Just report it as severe. Extreme turbulence violently tosses the aircraft about and may be impossible to control. Structural damage may result. Report it only as extreme. Occasional, intermittent, or continuous? If turbulence occurs only a third of the time, such as 20 seconds out of every minute, it is said to be occasional. If it occurs 20 to 40 seconds of every minute, it is said to be intermittent. Turbulence occurring more than two-thirds of the time, such as 40 or more seconds of every minute, is continuous.
