Traditional Beading W.A. Day’s Traditional Beading program helps create leaders! In November, W.A. Day teachers, staff, and students began the Traditional Beading Program in partnership with Kids First Family Center in Fort Macleod. Habit 1: Be Proactive- You’re in Charge Students at W.A. Day took the initiative to join the Traditional Beading program. This means making sure they are responsible for attending every Tuesday in order to finish the projects they started. Habit 2: Begin With The End in Mind- Have a Plan Students began their projects by creating a design on a beading template. Students demonstrated an understanding of mathematical strategies such as pattern making, repetition, counting, and halving numbers. Habit 3: Put First Things First- Work First Then Play The Traditional Beading program is at lunch time and does not interfere with learning. Students choose to focus on school work first and then participate in our program. Habit 4: Think Win-Win- Everyone can Win As a group the students learn the process and steps required to finish their projects. They start together and move on together, they think win-win by being patient and helping one another before moving on. Habit 5: Seek first to understand and then to be understood- Listen before you talk Students practiced Habit 5 as they watched the Traditional Beading teachers model the next steps in the process and asked questions when faced with a challenge. Habit 6: Synergize- Together is Better Students from a variety of backgrounds in grades 1-5 build relationships with our community partner (Kids First) and one another as they create synergy within the school and community. Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw- Balance Feels Best Traditional beading allows students to spend time with friends, learn in a different way, and help others. … And it’s fun!
