Top 5 Mistakes Players Make

Learn The Top 5 Mistakes Players Make and How To Fix Them
#1. Playing Too Many Games
Basketball is a very tough game on the body. And your body recovers and grows when it is
resting! You should NOT be playing six games over any given weekend ever. On a weekend day, you
should play no more than two competitive games. Game to game, your body needs time to recover.
Your mind needs time to process your decisions you made throughout the game. And you need time
between games to think about what you did correctly in a game, and what you can do to improve
between the games.
#2. Being Stuck On A Position
Do not get stuck on what position you play. Basketball is a dynamic sport, with opportunities all over the
court every possession. The best players can play all over the floor – no matter what their size, height,
athletic ability. Their skill set sets them apart. Not what position they play.
#3. WORRYING About Makes or Misses Rather Than Technique
There are times when you will take terrible shots – and you will make them. And there are times when
you will take great shots – and you will miss them. The goal is to TAKE GREAT SHOTS. You should
also be far more worried about your shooting technique than whether you are making or not making a
shot. You should be shooting the ball in one smooth rhythm and releasing the ball at the peak of your
jumpshot.
#4. Shooting 3 Pointers
There is a great story about a young basketball player. If his father saw him shooting any 3-point shots,
he would take away his ball for a week! One time, his father saw him shooting beyond the 3-point line,
and he was not allowed to shoot for a full week! That young boy would grow up to become a college
basketball player and once scored 50 points in a single game! He is now a college basketball coach, too!
#5. Practicing Ineffectively
Basketball is a game of muscle memory. The best way to perform better in games is if you improve your
skills. Shooting around, and being in the gym for 3 hours a day is not going to help you as much as
having a real workout skill development program.
Did you know that you will improve significantly by practicing for less time each day if
you have a player development plan?
(TRY IT FOR 2 WEEKS!)
Having a player development plan when you a get into the gym will allow you to stay focused and
practice for real improvement.
