Evaluation pilot request discussion. What is the timeline? Perhaps pilot after the
visit. With the two big events happening it might be possible to have aspects of the
pilot. Second aspect is fine however the first one will need more information. Tom
not too thrilled being a test case due to everyothing on our plate. Tom A wants to
use as a communications tool with his staff. Tom A and Gina will talk with Alice Dan
about piloting with Exdcutive Council and staff. And that the GC will contribute to
the policy goernance section.
GC Secretary discussion – if we had a secretary that person could be in charge of
communications. It would be a good leadership succession role and learns about
leadership and a member of the council. It’s better for the person to be a council
member. This is part of the discussion. Incdlue this in the retreat agenda.
Ends policies discussion. We are working on the issue of youth violence and you
talk with the community about why are we doing this and are we getting in to this
issue? The ends policies not don’t identify priorities – the beacon of es is in the ends
olicies and have a wide open scope to prioritize what these ends policies mean .
There is not a feeling of priorites for going down the Shabhala path. The event
potins out our needs for this. How do we break this down incrementally about what
we need to do? There is no deadline about when we need the ends polcies done
however the most important thing we can leave a s a legacy is well thougth out ends
policy and they are know and can be built upon. We started with elevator pitch and
discussion w/Joe Inskeep is if we are going to be a beacon of es and other things
think for instance if yoru children are a part of this – what does this ean to childen?
What does this mean for children? How does this mainifest? One way to research is
an internal committee to get people who have children and evelope a set 3-5 of
meaty wuestions to get what they would define as ultimate people we are serving
the result is they will experience these ends policies – what do they want? Do they
want activities. We can have an open conversation with agencies and other faith
based agencies of how we can mutually serve our missions? How do they see how
we can be a beacon of es---second scope of tasks is external. Third is hard research--demographics around center – who are they?
Once we get to a stage of research we can have a retreat then look at the approach –
what are we asking what are we doing and see how this might look for ends policies
and identify priorities.
Clarify who and what is the constituency and key is the direction we are headed and
we should be sensitive to the ownership piece and where the ownership sees we are
headed. Read Shambhala Principle and teahings on preparing our community and
engaging in society from the view of from e.g. peace perspective not violence
perspective.
Think about what are the vairious options of Shambhala being involved in youth
violence . One way to start with discussion is when the book comes out have a
broard group retreat. Using book as a vehicle would be good. Pres Reoch says in the
document we have affinity groups in many different worlds - what are these
affinities we have and how can we take this notion of enlightened society and mix it
with that wisdom-its about experimenting. What will we do collectively as
Shambhala center – there is one-off projects. We may have an ends policie that talks
about peole and results and talk about youth in Chicago that are at risk or
disenfranchised or poor etc that they will be able experience in their own fram =e of
reference basic goodness.
Tom A – what hea learned basic goodness was in the room – the kids were
empowered they have vision and heart
Ep---when we see basic goodness how can we support this? When we see basic
goodness, it’s empowering them to manifest.
Provide place for relationships to happen that may otherwise not happen to allow
possibilities to happen.
People will have a place to experience together.
Ode magazine – includes articles about amazing stuff people are doing. And part of
our ends policy is making accessible and real the good stuff going on. And crating a
real connection and spark for basic goodness with tohers.
How important it is for us to really maintain our practices because doing what we
are doing is throwing ourselves into the fray so we need courage confidence and to
be soft and open.

Building – do we have options that we feel there is best – we have to do this fairly
quickly – have a wider open community meeting then have a smaller group to take
things into consideration. Need to decide on a builder – get community input.
Celebration – after something like this we should celebrate and create an event that
is an appreciation and debriefing---good role for GC and hosts the event and leaders

Retreat – succession planning
Societal helth well being update – working on a hear of recovery group to start in
Rogers Park and then by new location and the other thing—Scott Perkins created a
Shambhala version of 12 – step and he can get on the calendar later Other is the Car
Team system is launched and there will be something publishe soon.
