Grow Team ONE - City Market / Onion River Co-op

Grow Team ONE (Old North End), a grassroots
community organization, started in March 2007. It aims to: be a
resource to residents who want to learn about growing, harvesting
and preserving food; facilitate the creation of sustainable home and
neighborhood gardens; connect residents looking for garden space
with homeowners; improve access to fresh produce for Old North
End residents; and implement urban permaculture design principles.
Grow Team ONE’s main activity is the development of two
neighborhood gardens - Archibald Neighborhood Garden, which
was established in 2007, and Riverside Neighborhood Garden,
which was started during the summer of 2009.
Archibald Neighborhood Garden
The three-year-old Archibald Neighborhood Garden (ANG) is located at
the intersection of Archibald and Walnut streets, across from H.O. Wheeler
School. With 19 plots, 30 gardeners and a team of mentors who hold
gardening and wellness workshops at the site, ANG is a vibrant community
hub and helps increase food security in the Old North End. Space for the
garden has been provided by the Visiting Nurse Association of Chittenden
& Grand Isle Counties. Intervale Compost Products donated all the raised-bed mix. The independently
run garden is sponsored by Burlington Parks & Recreation Department and receives guidance from
Friends of Burlington Gardens.
Riverside Garden
During the summer of 2009, Grow Team ONE, in partnership with Burlington Housing Authority and
Burlington Parks & Recreation established a new garden (Riverside Garden) on Intervale Avenue. This
past summer, 6 garden beds were used for outreach and education by the Dream Team mentoring
program, Burlington Parks and Recreation Summer Lunch Program, and 669 Riverside Avenue’s
Resident Managers. Two of the beds are designated for the Grow and Extra Row campaign and the fresh
vegetables will be donated to the Burlington Food Shelf. The site will be expanded and open to
community members in 2010.
