Durban - Opposition parties on Thursday
condemned Umgungundlovu District Mayor
Yusuf Bhamjee's bodyguards after they
allegedly killed a motorist on the N3.
IFP KwaZulu-Natal leader Blessed Gwala
called for the Independent Police Investigative
Directorate (IPID) to probe Monday's accident.
Andile Samuel Phungula was hit by a
speeding vehicle allegedly driven by
Bhamjee's bodyguards near Hillcrest.
"The indescribable meeting the mayor was
rushing to is not an excuse for Phungula's
death," said Gwala.
The DA's KwaZulu-Natal leader Sizwe Mchunu said Bhamjee's bodyguards needed to be
suspended.
"Bhamjee's bodyguards are becoming habitual offenders on this stretch of road and must be
suspended immediately pending the outcome of an investigation into this unfortunate incident,"
he said.
Last year Bhamjee's bodyguards, Thulasizwe Mbanjwa and Sthembiso Mokoena, were charged
with attempted murder after they allegedly shot at a motorist on the N3.
The charges of unlawfully discharging a firearm and discharging a firearm in a public place were
dropped.
The Daily News reported on Wednesday that one of the two men charged with attempted murder
had been driving the car that crashed into Phungula's.
A police spokesperson Jay Naicker said that no arrests had been made and a culpable homicide
docket had been opened.
