Water Reduction Strategy - Oxford Brookes University

Water Reduction
Strategy 2020
Vision
Our vision is for Oxford Brookes University to manage its water usage sustainably; meeting our
water needs through investment in water efficiency technologies and embedding a culture of
responsible water use.
Key drivers
1. Conserve the limited water resources in the south of England
2. Reduce the costs though efficient procurement and reduction in consumption.
3. Contribute to meeting the Brookes carbon reduction commitments
4. Meet the legal requirements as well as the University’s Environmental Policy
5. Contribute to the Brookes Corporate Responsibility Programme
Objectives
1. Install water logging devices on each fiscal water meter by June 2015.
2. Reduce water consumption by 15% by 2020 against the 2012-2013 baseline.
3. Carry out water audits of each site, including Residences, to identify water saving
opportunities by December 2016.
4. Continue to deploy water efficient technologies through retrofitting and refurbishment
programmes.
5. Explore business cases for rainwater harvesting and grey water recycling systems during
the planning of each building refurbishment project.
6. Create a culture of responsible water use that is embedded throughout the University; all
staff and students will be actively involved in reducing their own water use and inspiring
others to do the same.
7. Engage staff and students with annual water saving initiatives.
Finance
All projects will include a financial investment appraisal, to explore options on costs of projects
and associated payback times and savings generated.
Thank you to the Brookes EMS students, Barbara Silva, Ben Hewlett, Oliver Rathmill and
Rindra Rakotoarinjatovo for their work to research and develop this strategy
