Film Studies A2 Level (worth up to 140 UCAS points) This challenging two year course offers students the chance to study film topics in more depth and gives them two opportunities to produce their own films; the second year building on skills learnt in the first. In year two there may be opportunities for students to work alone on their film project, depending on the size of the class. In the first year, students will follow the AS film (see AS course outline). The second year of the qualification is 50% coursework: VIDEO- A five minute opening sequence of a genre film. RESEARCH- 2,500 word Research Project based on a topic chosen by the student. The remainder of the course focuses on 3 topics in preparation for the exam. Students will develop theoretical and critical approaches to analysing film in areas such as World Cinema and silent film, and will also study spectatorship . A level Film Studies is a useful supporting subject for those applying for performance-based, arts and media courses at university. Selection criteria for A2 film studies: • 5 GCSE's at grade A* - C (must include at least grade B English Language & English Literature). • Does not require GCSE media or film studies (but this would be useful). • Would benefit students who wish to develop their knowledge and enthusiasm for world cinema. The course will suit academic students who are comfortable with detailed written work and have a passion for film. Those keen to expand their technical and creative skills will also flourish but it should be noted that overall there is more emphasis on written work than practical work. • Competition for places on these courses is usually HIGH. • For further information contact Fiona Tomlinson: [email protected] Images from A2 Film studies video coursework
