Issue 01 / Autumn / 2016
Dear Parents, Carers and Students,
Congratulations to all of our students on completing their first term at secondary school. It has
been a busy term with two Red Days, lots of sporting achievements and our first Parent
Consultation Evening. As Year 7 Achievement Coordinator I would like to say how proud I am
of how well Year 7 have settled into Springwest. I have daily messages from teachers
congratulating students on their attainment and positive working attitude. It has been my
pleasure to hand out so many bronze awards in assemblies and I know more students are
working hard towards gaining enough points to receive their awards.
I look forward to seeing you all again in the Spring Term, have a restful and enjoyable festive
break. ~ Ms Steele
Red Days
Throughout the academic year we have a series
of drop down days to provide alternative
education opportunities and workshops.
This half term, year 7’s participated in Red day
focussing on volcanoes. The aim of the day was
to understand how volcanoes are formed and
develop scientific skills. The day entailed a
variety of activities including making volcanoes
as well as a group based activity called Evacuate.
Students thoroughly enjoyed the day especially
being able to work collaboratively with peers
and act out an evacuation. It was great to see so
many year 7’s engaged.
News
Well done to our year 7 girl’s netball team who
are currently top of the local schools league.
A number of students have also been celebrated
in assembly for being awarded their Sports
Honours award. This recognises their high levels
of effort, determination and positive attitudes in
their PE lessons. Well done to Ciara Docherty,
Samson Kalu, Freddie Solly, Aziz Claassen, Jonny
Williams, Sueda Kaya, Scott Dando, Dominik
Frysztak and Zain Ali.
We are also looking forward to seeing year 7
represent our year team in the school
production of Matilda.

My first term at Secondary school
“Our experience at Springwest academy has been a great start to secondary
school. Throughout the term we have made new friends and participated in
extra curricula activities which have proven to be lots of fun. One of favourite
events this term was Red Day. We got to see a variety of animals and learnt
about online safety. Our first term at Springwest has definitely changed us for
the better.” By Michelle and Milena
