Also in 2013, the golf club received several worthy accolades from Golf World Magazine as follows: th Ranked 6 best course in Aberdeenshire th Rated the 68 best course in their Top 100 Scottish courses nd Ranked 32 in their Top 100 Fun courses for the whole of Great Britain & Ireland The outward nine is characterised by natural hills and undulations requiring a range of shot-making in accordance with traditional gorse lined golf course. The inward nine demands accurate play from tee to green and is the epitome of a typical Scottish Links course noted for its magnificent setting and superb greens. We have the most amazing scenery with views over the Ythan River, with the dunes of the Forvie Nature Reserve in the background. From the high point on the front nine which is the ninth tee, the views of the clubhouse with Newburgh Village in the background are spectacular. It is also possible to see the North Sea and watch the ships heading towards and away from Aberdeen Harbour. The River Ythan estuary, which is next to the course, has the largest population of Eider Ducks in the UK and there are also many species of Tern. If you are interested in bird life then the river next to the clubhouse is a haven for you. There are 325 species of birds in Scotland and 225 of them can be found in and around the estuary. History of the Course The club was founded in 1888 and it was originally a nine hole course of 1 mile (1760 yards) and 401 yards in length. The course was laid out on the Newburgh Links which is located just north of the village between the Foveran Burn and the River Ythan. The original patron of the club was John H Udny of Udny who was the President of the Club until the outbreak of World War II. In 1994, new land was purchased to the south of the old course and the front nine holes were created. Greens of Scotland designed the course and Glen Andrews constructed the greens and the bunkers. The 18 hole course was opened in 1996 and th th plans were laid to build a Clubhouse on ground between what is now the 9 and 10 holes. The new Clubhouse was finally opened in April 2001 by Paul Lawrie the 1999 Open Champion. Sections of the Club We have a thriving Junior Section with coaching available for aspiring golfers to hone their skills and to reduce their handicap and become the golfers of the future. Our large male membership includes an active Seniors Section. We also have a thriving Ladies section. We are very happy to welcome visitors to experience the delights of our challenging links course.
