Signing Day for
HHS Athletes
Wednesday, November 12
was signing day for collegebound athletes. Five of our
own student athletes
participated in the college
athletic signing day. All of
the participants are members
of the Hughson High School
softball team who has four
consecutive championships
under their belt. A ceremony
was held in the foyer of the
HHS gym to mark this
historic event. Among those
athletes participating in the
event was Jessica Garcia,
the shortstop of the varsity
softball team, who will be
attending Oregon State
University. Courtney
Thornhill, a pitcher on the
championship team, is
attending Odessa College.
Mackenzie Babbitt made a
commitment to CSU
Northridge to play outfield
on their softball team, and
Taylor Lutz will be
attending Dominican
University. Attending
Dakota Wesleyan University
is third baseman Savannah
Ahumada. Seeing how
these young ladies’ hard
work and dedication has
paid off has inspired the

Hughson FFA Poultry Team Wins
National Contest
During the
last week of
October, the
Hughson
High Poultry
Team
attended the
National FFA
Convention in
Louisville,
Kentucky as a
result of
winning the
state finals last spring. At the National FFA Convention,
Hughson High, led by their coaches, Kelly Larson and
Brenda Vaca, competed against thirty-seven other teams
during a five hour competition. According to the Go All Out
newsletter, “The National FFA Poultry Evaluation CDE is a
competitive event that tests the participant’s ability to select
top quality poultry and poultry products needed for
successful production and marketing.” The team was
evaluated on various poultry products, a rigorous written
examination, and an oral reasoning component. Hughson
High is proud to report that its FFA Poultry Team won this
national competition! Zach Rose, an HHS alumni who is
now majoring in poultry at the University of Arkansas,
brought home the first place individual award, and Mark
Borges ranked 4th overall. Other teammates include
Madelyn Vaca and Kristin Voss. All team members brought
home a plaque, $1,000, and an all-expense paid trip to the
International Poultry Competition in Atlanta, Georgia.
Congratulations to the FFA Poultry Team! We wish them
the best at the international competition!
HHS Volleyball Team Earns Playoff Birth
For the first time in nine years, the Hughson High
volleyball team has earned a playoff spot. Headed up by
coach Regina Selfridge, the HHS volleyball team has
battled fierce opponents to earn one of four playoff spots
in the TVL. The team ended fourth in TVL play to earn
the final playoff birth. Throughout the season, the team
received numerous compliments on how much they have
improved over the past two seasons. According to head
coach, Regina Selfridge, “The girls’ hard work and
dedication is starting to show on the court.” Defeated in
the first round of playoffs by the Wildcats of Sonora, the
Husky volleyball team has made HHS proud as a result of
their accomplishments. They finished with an overall
record of 11-14-1. Hughson’s volleyball team’s national rank has moved +123, and the state rank has moved +17.
Several of the players were honored for their efforts. Jessica Garcia received All-League, and Savannah Ahumada
and Mackenzie Babbitt both received honorable mention. Hughson High School is honored to have this group of
athletes make such strides in attaining athletic excellence and representing the school in playoffs.
Finals Passes
Students who have worked diligently
throughout the school year will receive finals passes for their efforts. If
a student maintains a 3.0-3.49 for
both 6 and 12 week grading terms,
the student will receive 1 finals pass.
Students who maintain a 3.5-3.99 for
both terms will receive 2 finals passes. Students must have a 3.0 for both
grading periods to qualify for a finals
pass. It is the teacher’s discretion as
to whether or not they will accept the
finals pass. Some teachers may require students to take the final due to
course requirements; therefore, students need to verify each teacher’s
final pass policy prior to attempting to
use the pass. Students who are exempt
from taking a final will
be rewarded with a
movie, popcorn, and a
drink in Reeder Hall.
POST-SEASON PLAY
Hughson High School’s varsity football team has also earned their way
into playoffs by placing third in the Trans Valley League. In TVL play,
the Huskies only league loses were to rivals Modesto Christian and
Escalon, who took first and second place respectively. The Huskies
hosted the first round of playoffs against Le Grand on Friday,
November 14th. This playoff matchup was the first home game for the
Huskies since 1998, and the Huskies slaughtered Le Grand by a score
of 41-0. On Friday, November 21st, the Huskies made a trip to Bear
River High School to meet their post season opponents. While the
Huskies put up a good fight, they were defeated by Bear River 34-17.
Daniel Yanez will represent Hughson at the CIF State Cross Country
Championships to be held in Fresno’s Woodward Park on Saturday,
11/29. This is the 7th year in a row that we have qualified a team or an
individual to the state meet. Daniel’s success this year is a direct
result of his dedicated, steady training over the past year. This
summer, Daniel logged over 700 miles in training just to get ready for
the season. He has probably logged another 500 since summer
ended.
At the Sac Joaquin Section Championship, Daniel placed 7th to grab
one of the coveted trips to state. Most of the athletes ahead of Daniel
at the section meet were seniors. Daniel will be the #2 returner when
we toe the line at the 2015 section meet and will be looking to lead our
team back to state. Good Luck Daniel! Go Huskies!
