The purpose of these championships is to find, in ranked order, the ten best teams over the entirety of the
season’s racing and involves allocating points for the race time placing at each event throughout the season.
The accumulated points from best six performances of the seven events determine the overall placing. Points
will be awarded in the following manner; 1 point for 1st place, 2 points for second place and so on until the end
of that category. All teams are automatically entered upon completion of the correct entry procedure.
Senior competitions are for teams of 5 riders who are under 20 years on 31st December in the year of
competition.
Junior competitions are for teams of 4 riders who are under 16 years on 31st December in the year of
competition.
Gear restriction: 6.610 metres.

Mackinlay Cup for junior boys’ teams
The purpose of this competition is to give less competitive teams a chance at competing for well deserved
rewards. It is designed to encourage inexperienced and/or beginning teams. Handicaps are based on the
biggest difference in time between your average race time and your fastest time. To must have completed 5
races to be included in the handicap at the end of the season.
Gear restriction: 6.610 metres.

Schools should nominate 1 representative to attend these meetings. This can either be the School Sports
Co-ordinator/Teacher or a parent appointed by the Schools Sports Co-ordinator/Teacher

RESPONSIBILITIES OF SCHOOLS
Responsibilities of schools with teams entered in the Auckland Secondary School Team Time Trial
competitions are: -
1.
To identify a school co-ordinator to manage all communications between school and
College sport
2.
To have a team manager present for each team entered.
3.
To ensure all competitors and supporters are aware of the rules of competition and
adhere to them.
4.
To pay the race entry fees punctually on invoice
5.
To provide a minimum of one marshal or official for each team entered. These designated
officials may be parents but may not also be the team coach/manager.
COURSE MARSHAL AND OFFICIAL DUTIES
There need to be 42 marshals in place before the time trial can start. Marshal site allocations may vary from
race to race.
Marshals’ duties are:
o Attend the briefing at Okahu Bay Marina Carpark, kahu Bay at 5:45am
o To be in position by 6.15am.
o Once in location, check road surface for glass or obvious deterioration in road conditions. Report any
concerns to Race Manager, Ph: 021-956-346.
o To minimise and isolate hazards – warn cyclists of converging motorists; warn motorists of cyclists –
Marshals do not have the right to stop vehicles, but you can encourage the goodwill of the motorist to
give way to the cyclists.
o All cyclists are to observe the road code. Any infringement of these rules and the rules of the event
should be recorded and rung through to the Race Manager Ph: 021-508877
o Please be patient with local residents. We must maintain goodwill to keep the use of Tamaki Drive.
o Injured cyclist – refer to Race Day Contacts in handbook. If serious phone 111 immediately.
o Remain in location until the Race Manager gives the all clear for the race to end.
Gear Check Officials
o Report to the gear check area at 6.10am to be allocated tasks.
o Check all bikes comply with the road code and race rules.
o Reject bikes that do not comply.
Roll Out Officials
o Report to measured rollout area at 6.10am.
o Check the rollout restriction at 6.61 metres for all bikes
o Reject bikes that do not comply
Start Officials
o Report to Chief Starter at start line at 6.00 am to be allocated tasks.
o Start teams at 30 second intervals

AUCKLAND SECONDARY SCHOOLS CYCLING TEAM TIME TRIAL COMPETITION RULES
A INTRODUCTION
These rules are intended to
1. create an environment for fair competition between all teams
2. provide safety and protection
This event is administered under the bylaws of the Auckland Secondary School Heads Association. Please
refer to the official ASB Bank College Sport handbook.
B
GENERAL CONDUCT OF COMPETITORS
Competitors will:
1. Practice sporting behaviour at all times.
2. Be responsible for their own safety and the safety of others: obey traffic regulations and instructions
from race officials.
3. Treat other competitors, officials, and spectators with respect and courtesy.
4. Be responsible for knowing and following the rules.
5. Not talk to starters or to time keepers.
6. Wear issued numbers on upper left sleeve. Two team members to wear additional numbers on the
upper right sleeve. All numbers are to be carried by the riders

Any instance of dangerous riding or breach of race rules will incur a penalty.
C
PARKING
The official assembly / parking area is the car park beside the Okahu Bay marina; alternative parking is
available on Judges Bay Rd by the Parnell Baths.
Parking is NOT allowed in the Ports Of Auckland Ltd. terminal area and Rescue Centre car parks or on
Tamaki Drive between Ngapipi Rd and the start / finish area.

RACE ENTRY PROCEDURES
1. Schools must register the number of teams that they expect to enter with College Sport one week prior
to the first event. Continued entry is automatic after event 1. Schools are encouraged to enter further
teams during the competition as rider numbers permit.
2. Senior competitors must be under the age of 20 on 31st December in the year of competition:
Junior competitors must be under 16 years on 31st December in the year of competition.
3. Current attendance at the school entering the team is mandatory for all team members.
4. Each team entry must include the names and date-of-birth of each rider.
5. Each team entry must include the name and phone contact of a designated official for that team to
perform marshalling duties.
6. All schools are to have their team ride in correct uniforms / colours. Participation of any teams without
school uniforms will be at the discretion of the Race Manager.
7. Composite teams are allowed / encouraged in schools that cannot put together a whole team.
N.B. These teams will not be eligible for points
E EQUIPMENT
1. Bikes shall be outfitted as per road code eg must have front and rear lights attached. The lights are to be
operated, and visible, prior to and during the race. The light must be substantial. Batteries in the lights
must be AAA or bigger.
2. Riders shall wear Standards Approved helmets, securely fastened. Aero helmets are not permitted.
3. Riders may wear a hi-vis vest, however, numbers and team colours must be clearly visible.
4. Conventional drop handlebars only are permitted; triathlete type bars including clip-ons and/or bull bars are
not permitted.
5. Disc, composite and tri-spoke wheels are not permitted.
6. The maximum gear restriction is 6.610m on rollout.
7. There will be random Bike/Equipment Checks at Every Race. A fail means a No ride. A list of Bike/Equipment
Check standards will be posted on the Avanti Website.
F THE RACE
1. Senior teams consist of no more than 5 riders. The team’s time is taken when the front of the fourth rider’s
front wheel crosses the finish line. Teams may start with only four riders but teams finishing with three or
fewer riders will not receive a time.
2. Junior teams are to consist of no more than 4 riders. The team’s time is taken when the front of the third
rider’s front wheel crosses the finish line. Teams may start with only three riders but teams finishing with
two or fewer riders will not receive a time.
3. Gears will be checked at the race start no later than 5 minutes before a team races. Over-geared teams
may receive an unofficial start, at the discretion of the race manager.
4. The event start time is 6:30am. Teams leave at 30 second intervals. Seeding is based on the results of the
previous team time trial with the fastest team leaving first.
START
5. Each rider will start with one foot on the ground in the defined starting area. Held starts are not permitted.
No jumping on the mat.
6. Any team that misses its start may receive an unofficial start, at the discretion of the race manager, after the
last team has departed, time permitting.
RACE
7. Riders are to keep to the left hand side of the left lane of the road at all times (safety permitting) e.g. Start to
Ngapipi Road and Ngapipi Road to the finish.
8. Failure to stay in the left lane after the Parnell over bridge on the return will incur a penalty.
9. Crossing the road centre-line will result in disqualification.
10. Drafting is strictly forbidden. Drafting is defined as “To follow in the wake of any vehicle by less than 25
metres.”
11. Following or pacing vehicles, including bicycles on the course, will result in a penalty.
Support vehicles are to stay off the course.
12. Outside help during the race, unless for acceptable safety measures, will result in disqualification.
OVERTAKING
13. When overtaking a clear 2 metre wide gap should be maintained between all of the riders, in both teams, all
of time.
14. The passing team must call “overtaking - outside” as the lead rider draws level with the last rider of the team
to be passed.
15. The passed team must call “clear” when the last rider of the team overtaking has passed the lead rider of
the overtaken team.
16. The passed team must not speed-up to prevent an overtaking maneuver and must not draft the passing
team.
17. Any overtaking must be undertaken cleanly without any danger to either team.
18. Interference with another team will result in penalties.
19. No overtaking is permitted in Vale Road, prior to and after the turn.
NOISE
20. Riders are encouraged to talk to each other during the race to facilitate their best time, however, there is to
be NO talking as they approach Vale Road, in Vale Road and as they depart Vale Road.
FINISH
21. All of the team members must complete the entire length of the race. Failure of any rider to reach the turn
before rejoining their team will result in team disqualification.
22. Team riders must all finish in close proximity, not more than two abreast and preferably in single file, in order
to be recognized by the timekeepers as a team.
22. Riders may cross Tamaki Drive only by use of the crossing at the end of Solent Street.
PLACING
23. In deciding the overall placings for the championship series of races, the worst result for each team will be
dropped from all calculations.
24. In the event of a tie - final placing on finals day wins – this applies to first three placings.
G INFRINGEMENTS AND PENALTIES
Infringements include
Deliberate interference with another team.
Drafting.
Failure of marshals to attend race briefing.
Failure of teams to provide marshals.
Failure to finish as a team.
Failure to keep left at all times.
Failure to obey traffic regulations.
Talking in Vale Road.
Overgearing.
Rider turning early and rejoining team.
Riding without both hands on handlebars
Team being paced or followed during race.
Too many riders in a team.
Unsporting behaviour.
Use of inappropriate language and behaviour.

H. PROTEST PROCEDURES
1. Any disputes or infringements are to be notified to and handled by the Race Manager Ph: 021-956-346.
2. Penalties will be determined by the race manager dependant on the severity of the infringement and based
upon all reports and precedent. The penalties will be displayed on the results which will be online no later
than 6pm Sunday of each race.
3. Teams may appeal any penalty – a form can be downloaded from the Avanti website and must be
forwarded to Collegesport no later than 12 noon Monday after race day. It will be up to schools to provide
sufficient information on the form to enable the Disputes Committee to make a reasoned decision.
4. The Disputes Committee will review the appeal prior to the Monday ASSC Committee meeting.
5. The decision of the Disputes Committee is final and no further protest is available.
I. CANCELLATION
The Race Manager has the discretion to cancel racing at any time should he feel the safety of the riders is
compromised due to the weather conditions and or any other factors he chooses to consider.
J. SPONSORSHIP LOGO ON SCHOOL PLAYING UNIFORM
School Cycling Teams may adopt sponsorship on their cycling uniforms referring to the following
guidelines:

The school’s playing uniform should maintain its identity
The size or position of any sponsorship logo must not dominate or detract from, that
school’s uniform’s distinguishable nature.
No alcohol, tobacco, night club or similar advertising may appear on any clothing worn by
secondary school students while competing in a sanctioned secondary school sport.
Teams’ or individuals’ sponsorship may not conflict with any sponsorship arrangements of
the event or competition.
