Exam 70-297 Designing a Microsoft® Windows® Server 2003
Active Directory and Network Infrastructure
Lesson 12: Building a Migration Plan
(Skill 1)
Determining the Migration Path
 Migration paths
Four possible paths when upgrading a Windows
NT domain model to Active Directory
Build a completely new model from scratch
Migrate the existing domain model into a new
model
Perform an upgrade and then restructure
domains
Perform an upgrade and then leave the domain
structure as-is

Active Directory and Network Infrastructure
Lesson 12: Building a Migration Plan
(Skill 1)
Determining the Migration Path (2)
 Build a completely new model from scratch
Rarely the optimal migration method
Typically requires more work than other plans
Does not leverage organization’s investment in
existing infrastructure
Sometimes useful in small environments that were
poorly designed

Active Directory and Network Infrastructure
Lesson 12: Building a Migration Plan
(Skill 1)
Determining the Migration Path (3)
 Migrate the existing domain model into a new model
More common choice for most environments
Allows you to create fresh optimal design while
also leveraging investment in current infrastructure
Typically requires more time than an upgrade

Active Directory and Network Infrastructure
Lesson 12: Building a Migration Plan
(Skill 1)
Determining the Migration Path (4)
 Perform an upgrade and then restructure domains
or leave domain structure as-is
 Neither option is advised except for smallest of
networks
 Follow the process set forth in Table 12-1 rather than
performing an in-place upgrade
Advantages: Provides a roll-back option if problems arise;
reduces chance of errors occurring during upgrade;
reduces possibility of upgrade-related errors
Disadvantage: if any domain controllers also provide
other services, these services will need to be reinstalled
and configured

Active Directory and Network Infrastructure
Lesson 12: Building a Migration Plan
(Skill 1)
Determining the Migration Path (5)
 Domain consolidation
Decision should be made before you implement
the upgrade
Typically want to consolidate as much as possible
Process to determine if consolidation is required
Create an optimal Windows Server 2003 Active
Directory domain design and compare it to the
current Windows NT domain model
If it is identical, no consolidation is necessary; if it is
not, consider consolidation

Defining the Domain Controller
Creation Process
 Methods for domain controller creation
 In-place upgrade
 Dcpromo.exe with standard directory replication
 Dcpromo.exe, using a backup of the Active Directory
database
 Automated dcpromo.exe with standard directory
replication
 Automated dcpromo.exe, using a backup of the Active
Directory database
