About Monash Economics
Monash Business School is home
to one of the leading departments of
Economics in the region. Our trackrecord of excellence has been evident
since Monash University was founded in
1961. The Department has more than 50
academics working in virtually all major
fields of economics. Overall, the Monash
Business School has over 350 academics.
As one of the largest Business Schools in
Australia, we have enormous resources
and capabilities extending to all Business
and Economics related disciplines.
Publications
Funding for Travel
Over the last few years, members
of the Economics Department have
published in leading general interest
journals, including American Economic
Review, Econometrica, Science,
Quarterly Journal of Economics,
Review of Economic Studies, Economic
Journal, Review of Economics and
Statistics, European Economic Review,
International Economic Review, and the
American Economic Journals.
All academic staff members receive a
travel allowance, which can be used for
conference travel or to visit co-authors.
Additional funding is also available for
staff who have a paper accepted for
presentation at elite general conferences.

Low Teaching Loads
The teaching load for new junior staff is
one unit per year for the first three years.

Recent Economics recruits have
earned their PhDs from universities in
Europe and the United States such as
Cambridge, Columbia, Cornell, Maryland,
Oxford, Pittsburgh, Princeton, UC
Berkeley, UC San Diego, University of
Washington, and Zurich. Their research
areas include Applied Microeconomics,
Development Economics, Environmental
and Resource Economics, Experimental
Economics, International Economics,
Macroeconomics, and Public Economics.
In addition, the Department allocates
substantial funding for:
- Research Grant Incentive Scheme
- Inviting Distinguished Visitors
- Inviting Young Scholars in the initial
stages of their career
- Internal Department Research Grants
Complementing our strong research
environment, the Department also provides
extensive support for innovative educators
with grants available for teaching and
learning innovations.

publications in high quality journals.

Links with Research Centres
Visitor Program
Monash Business School includes
separate departments for Economics
and for Econometrics. Together these
units represent one of the largest and
strongest concentrations of economists
in Australia. The Department of
Economics has close links with the
Centre for Health Economics (CHE),
the Centre for Development Economics
and Sustainability (CDES), the Monash
Business Policy Forum (MBPF) and the
Monash Sustainability Institute (MSI).
Along with a strongly engaged seminar
program, the department collaborates with
a number of distinguished international
researchers and academics in diverse
fields. Some of our visiting academics now
have ongoing appointments with Monash
Economics, like John List, Leo Simon and
Yves Zenou.
Active Seminar Schedule
The Department runs four seminars
each week with presentations by staff,
postgraduate students and visitors
from other universities both domestic
and international.

Monash University is located in
Melbourne and the Economics
Department has a strong presence at
Caulfield and Clayton campuses. For
the last five years (2011–2015) Melbourne
has been rated by the Economist as the
world’s most liveable city.
