In part (a), the causes are explained. The notion of decreased labour costs in
Mexico and reference to the data is an explanation. To expand to a full
explanation, the candidate may have discussed the impact of profits and the
potential for future growth from this strategy. The potential to increase trade
with Canada through NAFTA is an explanation.

In part (c), the positive effect of the first strategy is a statement only. The
negative impact is an explanation because New Zealand staff not wanting to
move has been reasoned due to the dramatically lower wages.
The positive impact of the second strategy was regarded as lacking sufficient
business understanding, there is very little link between lower prices and being
true to New Zealand. The negative impact of the second strategy, however, is
a reasoned explanation.
The conclusion merely repeats the arguments given in the earlier discussion.
In part (a), the causes are explained – low sales due to the recession and the
relocation costs that are explained in relation to the data from the resource
material.
The effects were regarded as not being explained sufficiently.

A4
The positive and negative impacts of the strategies have all been explained.
There is clear reasoning behind each. To extend to full explanations, the
candidate needs to take the next step and show the impact on the business or
stakeholder. For example, decreasing price would lead to increased revenue
as more products are sold. This includes both business knowledge and
provides a more in-depth understanding.
The candidate merely stated the causes and effects of the quality control issue
in part (a).

In part (c), the candidate uses “also” twice. This tends to mean a second
reason stated rather than an explanation. However, the negative impact of the
first strategy is a reasoned explanation – it links different parts leading to a
change in production.
The positive impact of the second strategy is explained – additional evidence
from the conclusion, “operations can continue to run the way they are”, has
been added to allow the candidate an explanation.
The negative effect of the second strategy is holistically explained. If the
candidate had said the new QC measures would need to be staffed, so this
may mean employing new workers, then this would be an explanation.
