TEAM STARS & STRIPES SERVE THE GUADALAJARA COMMUNITY BEFORE TAKING
ON MEXICO’S CONADEIP ALL-STARS IN TÁZON DE ESTRELLAS ON SATURDAY
Team Captains selected from Augustana College, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater,
U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and Wartburg College
FRIDAY, DECEMBER 14, 2012 – GUADALAJARA, MEXICO – The NCAA Division III All-Stars selected from 26
colleges in the United States to the Team Stars & Stripes roster for the Tazón de Estrellas took part in a
service project on Thursday to benefit an impoverished neighborhood of Guadalajara.
The Americans will face the CONADEIP All-Stars on Saturday at La Fortaleza Azul (The Blue Fortress) in
Guadalajara at 12pm CST and the Team Stars & Stripes coaching staff has selected four captains to lead
them. The game will be available live via a webcast in Spanish language only at
http://sinapsis.gda.itesm.mx.
The group of 48 players, along with coaches and team staff, held a football clinic for youngsters in Valle del
Sol. Those taking part were able to try on football helmets and pads, learn to throw and catch a football
and take part in basic drills, which introduced many to the sport for the first time. They also helped clear
an area land to make it more suitable as a play area for the community’s children.
“This was an amazingly positive day that will leave a lasting impact on our team, and on the people of the
Valle del Sol area,” said Global Football President Patrick Steenberge. “Days like this keep me motivated
to continue to grow Global Football.”
Defensive line coach Jim Catanzaro of Lake Forest (Ill.) College, who has been nominated as a candidate
for the Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year award, added: “What Global Football has created here is truly an
amazing experience and I am loving every minute as a part of it. This has been an amazing experience for
me personally.”
Photos of Team Stars & Stripes in the community can be found at www.facebook.com/GlobalFootballLTD.
The four captains selected by the Team Stars & Stripes coaching staff are quarterback Alex Coviello (U.S.
Merchant Marine Academy), offensive lineman Jon Orr (Wartburg College), defensive lineman Jake
Hohlstein (University of Wisconsin-Whitewater) and punter Arnie Fitzwater (Augustana College).
Saturday’s game will feature some competitive battles in the trenches and the offensive and defensive line
coaches are excited at the prospect.
“We have a very large group with 11 guys,” said Catanzaro. “They are highly energetic and I think we will
be able to create some problems on Saturday. With so many guys we are trying to get as many
combinations as possible. We have one set with six defensive linemen and we are pretty aggressive in
that set.”
Evaluating how he expects Teams Stars & Stripes to fare up front of the other side of the ball, offensive
line coach Ron Tyner of Elmhurst (Ill.) College said: “We have a great group of offensive linemen. We have
two different types of groups of guys – one that is a good zone blocking group and one that is a good veerblocking group. So we are very versatile. They have been working hard. I think we have a group that will
play very hard for the guys behind them.”
The NCAA Division III All Stars from 26 different colleges in the United States, led by Don De Waard of
Central College, take on the cream of college football players from Mexico, coached by the legendary
Frank Gonzales of Tec de Monterrey.
The Tazón de Estrellas and its forerunner the Aztec Bowl have produced a series of exciting games and
established a fierce but friendly rivalry between the Americans and Mexicans. The Tec Monterrey All-Stars
won 24-12 in 2009 before Team Stars & Stripes leveled the series with a 48-7 victory in Toluca in 2010 and
the CONADEIP All-Stars won by a margin of 45-27 in 2011.
