Instructions for creating Treemaps on excel

Instructions for creating Treemaps on excel:
Integrating File into excel:
Add-in the attached excel file – for use in schools this may need to be done by IT so
that it is accessible on all computers. I added the file through my ‘developers’ tab
but this may not be applicable to everyone. You can find this from:
file-> options-> customize Ribbon and check the Developer box in right hand side
box, then OK.
Click the developer tab in excel and add in. Browse to locate the treemap file and
add in.
Once you have integrated the file it should automatically appear every time you use
excel.
Using the TreeMap:
layout your results in a 1D table such as detailed below. Highlight data including the
headings (although if you don’t have headings you can still produce the graphs just
uncheck headings).
1. Click on add-in tab
2. Click chart maker and select Simple Treemap
3. on the Treemap menu change color-> add color at level to 1
4. OK
Your chart will be automatically created on another sheet.
Drop down menu select Simple Treemap
11
Change to 1
Font size can be
changed here or
on the chart
To alter the font size right click on the chart and manually change it. To change the
colours, right click on the chart and select group->ungroup. (NOTE: if you have
already altered the font you should be able to change the colours without ungrouping
as edit should be on).
To breakdown each section again, see 2nd set of data with hierarchy labels.
This demonstrates the advantage of Treemaps over Pie charts.
