Frequently Asked Questions about Atlanta Gas Light’s Northwest Georgia Expansion Pipeline Who is Atlanta Gas Light? Atlanta Gas Light delivers natural gas on behalf of approved gas marketers to residences and businesses in your community. We safely operate and maintain a natural gas pipeline system over 55,000 miles long that delivers reliable, environmentally friendly natural gas to more than 1.6 million customers across Georgia. Why is Atlanta Gas Light working in my area? Atlanta Gas Light is tasked with providing enough natural gas to serve our customers on the coldest days of the year. The north Georgia region has experienced rapid growth in the past 25 years. Much of that growth has shifted to areas farther removed from Atlanta Gas Light’s existing interstate supply points and highpressure transmission pipeline system. We need to upgrade our pipeline system in these areas so that we can improve our service to homes and businesses on peak demand days and also improve access to new interstate supply points. Today’s low natural gas prices also present an ideal time to invest in system-wide improvements that will help the region and local communities. How do local communities benefit from the system upgrade? Pre-construction and construction activities contribute to the local economy by employing up to 75-100 contractors during a project – everything from right-of-way contractors and heavy-equipment operators to pipefitters and welders. Over the life of the project, many of these contractors spend their money in the community at restaurants, hotels, grocery stores, and more. As the region’s economy continues to improve, our upgraded infrastructure will be able to provide the additional natural gas needed for continued economic development in your community and across north Georgia. Plus, natural gas is considered America’s cleanest and domestically abundant fuel and Atlanta Gas Light will continue to provide it to existing and future customers across Georgia. What is the route for the Northwest Georgia Expansion Pipeline? This 24-inch transmission pipeline will run for 10.2 miles along an existing Atlanta Gas Light easement through Paulding and Cobb Counties. The pipeline will start at a regulator station to be constructed near our easement close to the Bartow/Paulding county line in the vicinity of Lucas Road. From that point, it travels cross-country in a generally southeastern direction through Paulding and Cobb Counties to an existing regulator station off of Mars Hill Road west of Kennesaw. Along the way, it will cross several county and state roads including GA Hwy 61, Dabbs Bridge Road, Seven Hills Blvd, Dallas-Acworth Hwy (GA Hwy 92), County Line Road, Brookstone Drive, and McLain Road. Following an existing easement allows us to efficiently meet our obligation to provide enough natural gas to serve our customers on the coldest days of the year. What does this mean for me? In your area, our contractor Pond and Company will oversee surveying crews from TranSystems and land acquisition specialists from DESI that will begin surveying road crossings and our existing easement that may run through your property and also contacting private property owners along the project route. The surveyors will have Atlanta Gas Light identification. As with all of our construction projects, safety is our top priority. Great care will be taken in all phases of the project from beginning to end in each neighborhood. We will make every effort to minimize inconveniences to property owners along the route. What is an easement? An easement, which may also be referred to as right-of-way, is a strip of land on which a property owner grants to another party the right to use the land for a specific purpose – in this case, Atlanta Gas Light’s right to operate, maintain and, if necessary, replace or add a natural gas pipeline. During construction, additional temporary space may be needed to accommodate heavy equipment. After construction has been completed, the easement will be restored to its pre-construction condition. When will construction begin? Surveying is scheduled to begin in September 2015. The construction schedule for the Northwest Georgia Expansion Pipeline will be determined once the survey is complete. However, construction is not expected to begin before 2017 and the company will notify affected property owners before work begins. How will I be notified before construction begins? Property owners along Atlanta Gas Light’s easement will receive a letter from the company before construction begins.
