It is mandatory to participate in the following competitions:

Team Grooming





Teams of three participants will be made up by the show committee
Chutes will be supplied, but participants must bring an animal.
Animal must be washed and dried before the competition begins.
Clippers, blowers and any necessary show supplies may be used.
Once at chute area you are not allowed to leave so bring all equipment with you.
Team Judging







The teams are expected to judge a class of cattle in a show ring setting.
Teams of two participants preferably from the same age category.
If you don’t have a partner, one will be assigned.
Dress is Western Formal
One of the team members will act as the judge and the other will act as the ring person and then
you will switch. Each participant is required to ask as both the judge and ring person
The participant acting as the judge must give oral reason over the microphone in front of an
audience.
All other teams must be out of the judging area and unable to hear reasons being given by the other
teams until they have completed their competition.
Public Speaking
Theme: Why did you choose Limousin?





Tell us why you chose the Limousin breed. If your family has had Limousin for many years tell us
what you like about them and why you want to continue with the breed.
Participants will speak on a pre-assigned topic. (Topics will be provided ahead of time)
Speeches must be written by the participant.
All participants will be present in the competition area 15 minutes prior to the competition’s
scheduled start time.
Speech length - 3 - 7 minutes
Oral Marketing





Contestants may market a Limousin animal or genetics or a photo (no larger than 8X10) as the
subject. Contestants may use a heifer/cow other than their own. The contestant may hold or tie the
animal or have another entrant hold the animal during the talk. The animal is not to be fitted
Immediately preceding the talk, contestants will be required to provide the judges with a
registration certificate for the animal being “sold”. The judges will use the registration certificate to
evaluate the accuracy of pedigree and performance information provided by the contestant and to
also ask questions. The certificate will be returned to the contestant at the conclusion of the talk
Contestants will be judged on their knowledge of the animal they are selling (25%), ability to relate
important information about the subject (25%), organization and style (25%), poise and delivery
(25%).
Materials allowed: Photo of cow/heifer, Photo of Dam, Sire, Service Sire of cow/heifer, registration
paper and business cards.
There is no limit on the length of the sales talk

Participants will compete individually and learn the basics of keeping females in the herd on the
criteria of past performance and appearance.
There will be a short presentation about EPDs and what the industry is looking for prior to
competition
EPDs and a farm based scenario will be given to participants prior to competition
Participants will select 3 animals from a pen of 5 and give written reasons as to their selection

Teams of 4 will be assigned by the show committee
Questions will be made up of multiple choice, true and false and team questions
Questions will be related to beef cattle and the Limousin breed
Herdsman Award



Displays with 2 or more cattle will be included in the judging for the herdsman award
Judging begins on Thursday at 3pm and concludes at the end of the Confirmation show on
Sunday

The Sportsmanship Award should be awarded to a junior who exhibits great teamwork skills, is
friendly and kind to other competitors and who is an ambassador for the Limousin breed
Art
Theme: "Cattle and Western Decorations for the Home"







Art must be original work done by the junior
Any medium may be used (paint, pencil, clay, wood, metal etc.)
Art cannot be computer generated.
Art cannot include photographs
Only one art piece per competitor. Please do not put your name on the art. Art will be judged by
number.
Art will be sold by silent auction. The silent auction will start Thursday and will close Sunday
evening at the Cattlemen's Evening and banquet. Please notify the registration desk when
handing in your art if you do not want it included in the silent auction

Photographs must have been taken by the junior
One photograph per competitor
The photograph cannot be digitally enhanced

or presentation
All photographs become the property of CJLA and may be used by CJLA or CLA for promotional
purposes
Please do not put your name on the photograph, it will be judged by number

You must design a logo for ONE of the following;
o Canadian Junior Limousin Association (CJLA) or;
o Canadian Junior Limousin Impact Show
Specifics for each logo;
o This logo can either include Canadian Junior Limousin Association or just use the
abbreviation CJLA
o Canadian Junior Limousin Impact Show is the official title of the show and must be used
in the logo. The logo will be used every year for the show. Keep in mind there will need
to be a way to incorporate the location and date of the show.
Open to all age divisions, one entry per competitor
Image must completed by the junior at home and must be computer generated
All images become the property of CJLA and CLA
The winning entry will be used to create theofficial logo of either CJLA or the Impact Show
Images must be submitted prior to the Impact Show.

Additional Information and Rules
1. Meals
** All meals must be purchased in advance. Tickets are required and will be provided at
registration desk.**
**There is no food available for purchase at the grounds.**
**The show grounds are in town and restaurants and grocery stores are close by**
a. Junior's- All meals starting with supper July 27 and ending with supper July 30 are
included. Meal Tickets will be included in the package that you receive when you
register at the show . You will need your meal ticket at each meal .
b. Parents, Siblings and Friends - A meal package will be available to purchase. Payment
must be made with the junior's registration
c. Individual tickets may be purchased for supper on Saturday July 29th and Sunday July
30th. Payment must be included the junior's registration.
i. Saturday July 29th Canadian Limousin Association AGM and Awards
This meal is free to CLA Members. Non CLA members must purchase a ticket in
advance
ii. Sunday July 30th Cattlemen's Evening, Guest Speaker and Aggregate
Presentations. You can purchase individual tickets for this supper.

3. Registration Papers and Tattoos
a. All entries in the Purebred/Fullblood classes must provide a CLA
certificate of registration. Registration pending will not be accepted.
b. Registered and Recorded cattle must have a legible tattoo which conforms to CLA records
to be eligible. Tattoos may be inspected by show officials at time of arrival.
4. Stalling
a. Tie Outs will be available for all animals
b. Move In must be complete by 3pm July 27 and Move Out must be complete by 12pm
July 30
c. Bedding- wood chips will be provided
5. CJLA Annual General Meeting 4pm July 27th- Attendance is MANDATORY for all juniors
6. Additional Information
a. Alcohol is not allowed
b. Photographer- pictures will be available for purchase after the show
c. Concerns/issues must be directed to the show committee or CJLA Coordinator. The
decision of the committee and CJLA coordinator is final.

Registration, Entry and Fees
a. Individual entry forms and required fees must be postmarked by the entry deadline to avoid penalty.
b.
Penalties will be outlined on the entry forms.
c.
All cheques must be written to the appropriate Province/region and must accompany the entry
form(s).
d.
Entry deadline dates, fees, and special rules are located with each entry form.
e.
All entries must be returned to the person(s) outlined on the entry form(s).
f.
All entry forms will include the entrants, as well as the entrants’ parent/guardian, signature in
recognition of the CJLA Rules and the stated CJLA Disclaimer.
g.
All entrants/parents/guardians must sign all Disclaimers and Points of Recognition for entry into the
Conference to be official.
Eligibility
a. Participants in the National Conference are required to hold an individual CJLA membership.
b.
Participants must be 21 years or younger as of January 1st of the competition year.
c.
No participant will be discriminated against as a result of a physical, emotional or mental handicap.
The only requirement is to specify on the entry form so accommodations can be made.

Individual Competition
a. Individual competition may consist of, but is not limited to, the following events: Industry Quiz,
Judging Contest, Public Speaking, Conformation Show, Showmanship, Print Marketing, Oral
Marketing, Photography, and Herdsman. Any new competition ideas must have a set of rules and
approved by the CJLA Board of Directors and are at the discretion of the host province.
b.
At all conferences the top 10 scores in each competition will receive points. The highest score will
receive 10 points with each subsequent score receiving one less point, down to 1 point for the 10th
score.
c.
Contestants must compete in Team Judging, Industry Quiz, both Print and Oral Marketing and
Showmanship at the scheduled competition time.
Team Competition
a. Team competition(s) may consist of, but are not limited to, the following events: Team Grooming,
Quiz Bowl, Show Ring Judging, or Team Problem. Any competition must have a set of rules and be
approved by the CJLA Board of Directors.
b.

All cattle must meet the health requirements for the province where the event is held. Any questions
regarding health requirements should be directed to your local or provincial veterinarian.
At all conferences the top 10 scores in each competition will receive points. The highest score will

High Point/Aggregate Competition
a. Only your one highest placing animal in the entire Confirmation show will receive Aggregate points.
Conformation points are awarded only to the entrants name as seen on the entry form.
b.
Points cannot be transferred to other competitors in any manner.
c.
The High Point/Aggregate competition will be determined by points won in all but the competitors’
lowest score in the individual or group competitions.
d. No overall Aggregate prize will be available, only age division Grand and Reserve champion
Aggregates.
7.
Ties
a.
Ties will be broken by comparing scores in the following events.
i. 1st Tie-breaker = Marketing
ii. 2nd Tie-breaker = Industry Quiz
iii.

3rd Tie-breaker = Team Judging Contest.
Peewee, Junior, Intermediate, and Senior division eligibility.
a.
Peewee: 8 years and under as of January 1st of the competition year.
b.
Junior: 9-12 years as of January 1st of the competition year.
c.
Intermediate: 13-16 as of January 1st of the competition year.
d. Senior: 17-21 as of January 1st of the competition year.

Conduct, Hearing Committee and Disciplinary Action.
a. Conduct:
i. All competitors in attendance of Conferences are expected to conduct themselves with
dignity and respect.
ii. All competitors must abide by the on-site rules.
iii.
Violations include, but are not limited to: misrepresentation of animals, vandalism,
theft, fighting, unsportsmanlike conduct, failure to comply with directors and officials, being
in possession of or under the influence of alcohol or other prohibited substances while on
the competition grounds and/or in public areas.
iv.
b.
Violations of these standards will result in immediate review by the Hearing Committee.
Hearing Committee: Shall consist of attending representatives of the CJLA Board, CLA Board, and the
CJLA advisor.
i. An individual brought before the Hearing Committee may be accompanied by their parents
or legal guardian.
ii. Failure of an individual to appear before the Hearing Committee when called will be
considered cause for the committee to take disciplinary action against the individual.
iii.The committee, upon finding an individual in violation of the conduct rule, may take
action as deemed necessary
10. Liability Provisions
A. The host committee of the show is responsible to include in their entry forms, registration forms,
information pages, and show catalogues, a Statement of Liability. The Statement, to be read as
follows or in a similar context: The CLA as well as the CJLA Provincial and National Committees and/or
any of its employees and the Host Fairgrounds and/or any of its employees are not responsible for any
accidents/thefts during the time prior to, during or after the conference.

Age of animals is based on January 1st of the competition year.

Rules will be published on the entry forms specific to each class.
i.
Only one entry per class per junior will be allowed.
j.
The National Conference is to include an open class in the conformation show. Any animals not
owned by the junior or junior’s family will show in the open class and this includes all leased cattle.
The class winners from the open class will not vie for the overall championship but will still receive
confirmation points in the aggregate competition.
No artificial filling of animals will be allowed unless under the advice of a licensed, non-owner, veterinarian.
Violation will result in immediate review by the Hearing Committee.
All livestock entries must be stalled by the published move-in time on the published move-in date. Livestock
release will not occur before the published time, unless approved by the show committee.
Ownership Rules
The overall discretion of the host province determines ownership rules for their respective show, upon
approval from the CJLA board, however the following are guidelines.
a.
All entries in the Bred & Owned division must be registered as such under the entrants’ name. A copy
of the CLA registration paper must be provided during event registration.
b.
All entries, excluding Bred & Owned, must be registered to the entrant, entrants’ immediate family or
entrants immediate family farm, or registered as a 4H project of the entrant. A copy of the CLA
registration paper or 4H certificate must be provided during event registration.
5. Commercial cattle entries must display Limousin characteristics or be accompanied by CLA percentage
papers at the discretion of the host province show committee.

Parent participation is strictly forbidden. Violations will result in immediate dismissal from the competition or
event. Senior members are encouraged to assist the more junior members.
Showmanship – General Rules
1.
National Conference
a.
Entrants must be members of the CJLA.
b.
Each entrant must use the same animal for all phases of the Showmanship Contest.
c.
Entrants must exhibit their own Conformation Class entries in the Showmanship competition, unless
they did not bring cattle.
Judging – General Rules
1.
Format
a. The Judging Competition may be made up of any or all of the following components: oral reasons,
written reasons, show team judging, visual identification, and EPD judging, left to the discretion of
the host province show committee.
b.
All components of the judging competition will score equally in the final tabulations.
c.
Placing classes will be worth 50 points per class, reasons will be worth 50 points per class, for
individual judging.
d.
The Judge and Ring-person will be weighted equally in a Show-Ring Judging class. Western formal
dress is recommended as well as each competitor being both the Judge and the Ring-person.
e.
Specific rules will be announced prior to each judging competition.
f.
While the competitions are in progress there shall be no conferring between contestants or between
parents and/or advisors and contestants.
g.
Contestants must remain with their assigned groups throughout the entire contest unless otherwise
directed by attending Show Official.

The quiz will consist of multiple choice and true/false questions.
A maximum of 1 hour will be allowed.
Contestants may not bring notes, books or reference materials into the testing area. All necessary materials
will be provided.
Conferring with other contestants, use of notes or any other form of cheating will be grounds for
disqualification of a contestant.
Oral Marketing
Oral Marketing uses a live setting complete with animal or a photo (no larger than 8X10) and potential buyers. The
purpose of this contest is to evaluate the effectiveness of the presentation and the contestant’s ability to
merchandise cattle.

1. Create an advertisement Limousin related by using materials provided at the conference, during the allotted
time.
2. Outside material and previously prepared advertisements will be disqualified.

f. Please put your show number on the back of your photo for identification.
g. Your photo may be kept for promotional purposes.
Public Speaking
