Whether you are up North or staying in Florida, this is the time of the year when the sun is closest to the earth and we need to be especially vigilant in the use of a good sunscreen. I heartily recommend that all my readers take advantage of this excellent information from Consumer Reports Magazine. It can be found online and/or in the May issue. I will post just a few reminders from that report below: 8 When Using Sunscreen Shake it. The directions may not tell you to do this, but it’s a good idea because it helps distribute the active ingredients throughout the sunscreen. Use enough. Apply sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before you go outside. For lotions, a good rule of thumb is a teaspoon per body part or area: 1 teaspoon for your face, head, and neck; 1 for each arm; 1 for each leg; 1 for your chest and abdomen; and 1 for your back and the back of your neck. For sprays, apply as much as can be rubbed in, then repeat. Regardless of which kind you use, reapply every 2 hours and after swimming or sweating. Use spray sunscreens carefully. The FDA has said it is exploring the risks of inhaling spray sunscreens. Until we know more, our experts say to avoid using sprays on children, and do not spray them directly on your face. Instead, spray sunscreen onto your hands then apply it to your face. If you do use a spray on a child, spray the sunscreen into your hands and rub it onto the child’s skin. Sprays are flammable, so let them dry before going near an open flame. So many of our Corinthian members have headed to cooler climates for the summer. However, there are still many of us full timers here in Lighthouse Point and always ready for more fun. 10 Our Spring General membership meeting and dinner was a great success. The casual attire fit well into the theme of “It’s 5:00 Somewhere”. Chef Rudy provided us with a great meal. The band played and we danced the night away. Our recent trips to Ocean Reef and Admiral’s Cove were also great fun and we managed to get some tennis and pickle ball matches in along with our usual happy hours and great meals. I am delighted to welcome our new Corinthian members to the club. If you are interested in joining us, please contact our Membership Chairperson, Soraia Berger, at ssraberger@ gmail.com. We have lots more fun activities planned for the fall and you are welcome to join us. Wishing everyone a wonderful summer. LIKE us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com /pages/Lighthouse-Point-Yacht-andRacquetClub/171872570750 As this news letter goes out it marks the beginning of my 6th year with LPYRC. I have enjoyed working with a great membership and staff and hope to add several more years behind the wheel as your Marina Manager. Summer has finally begun and with it is the constant and steady blistering heat and also a unpredictable hurricane season. The heat tends to slow down a lot of boat traffic but I am seeing more and more boats of all sizes adding “mister systems” to their boats. One company, Mister-Comfort has a great marine application and by adding some ice to the water reservoir the mist effect brings the temperature around you down a solid 20 degrees. These units are very compact and fairly priced. As for the hurricane season, please keep your boat prepped and ready with extra lines and go ahead and remove extraneous stuff like paddle boards and kayaks so those items won’t slow your precious time down if a storm bears down on us. Another very useful tip is to bring some spare sheets or towels to the boat. When storing your bimini top curtains/windows (eisenglass) it’s very important to put sheets between the plastic so they won’t stick to each other, otherwise you will be left with a haze in the glass that will obstruct your ability to see after you reinstall them. Lastly, keep your boat’s fuel topped off so if you need to relocate you will have plenty of fuel to get there. Please be safe out there and bring plenty of water with you.
