Late Breaking News Editorial: CRB`s Bad Timing, Bad Form Six

November 2, 2009
Six Honored With Hall Inductions
Three Country radio stalwarts and three exceptional air
personalities will be inducted into their respective Halls of
Fame during CRS-41 next February. Read on for insight into
the commendable careers of some of this format’s finest.
Country Radio Hall of Fame:
The late Cy Blumenthal was a radio pioneer
in every sense of the word. He learned the radio
business with his brother-in-law at a Chester,
PA radio station in 1949. Within two years, he
bought his first station in Arlington, VA, and
within eight years had a chain of five stations.
Cy Blumenthal
But it wasn’t buying stations that made Cy a
pioneer, it’s what he did with them that puts him in the Country
Radio Hall of Fame. “Country & Western Music” wasn’t
exactly the format of choice when Cy began buying radio
stations in 1951. But over the next seven years he became the
first broadcaster to establish a chain of exclusively Countryformatted stations in large markets. Over that time he bought
and turned Country WARL/Washington, DC, WCMS/Norfolk,
WHMS/Memphis, KCKN/Kansas City and WABB/Mobile.
He also was the first to use the slogan “Modern Country” – in
1957. But his greatest, and perhaps most enduring, contribution
to this format came in the people he hired and inspired. Among
them, Connie B. Gay and George Crump would go on to own
their own Country stations.

Late Breaking News
• Clear Channel’s WRDU/Raleigh
will flip to News/Talk at year end, GM
Dick Harlow told the Triangle Business
Journal. In the Summer ‘09 Arbitron ‘RDU improved 1.8-2.2
(13-12), its best results in at least a year, behind crosstown Curtis
Media-owned WQDR, which dipped 6.6-6.4 (2-4).
• Citadel/Nashville Titans Radio GM Hunter Rice has been
promoted to GM for the cluster, which includes Country WKDF.
He replaces Dave Kelly, who has transferred to a broader
programming role for the company’s Country stations, including
‘KDF. Rice has been handling the cluster management on an
interim basis since August.
• George Strait will headline an arena tour with Reba
McEntire beginning Jan. 22 in Baltimore; 19 dates are booked
through April.
Editorial: CRB’s Bad Timing, Bad Form
Country Aircheck is outraged at the manner in which the
Country Radio Broadcasters handled the dismissal of Exec. Dir.
Ed Salamon last Wednesday (Breaking News 10/28). We’re equally
disturbed by the message this sends to this industry’s stakeholders.
It is not this editorial’s place or intent to question the board’s decision,
or address the issue of Salamon’s performance. There are surely
multiple views on that subject. The CRB Board can do whatever they
want. They are charged with doing the right thing for the organization
and the industries that have supported CRS for 41 years.

What is deeply troubling and disappointing, however, is the way
in which the dismissal was executed. Whatever appraisal one has
of Ed Salamon, he has been one of the longest tenured and most
committed supporters of CRB in its history. His status as one of the
format’s foremost broadcasters and attendance at early seminars
no doubt bolstered CRS’ credibility. He became one of its biggest
advocates, encouraging the companies he’s worked for to put their
financial support behind CRS. He served more than 25 years on the
Agenda Committee and CRB Board, and was CRB President for
nine years before being named Executive Director seven years ago.
Dismissing him so unceremoniously from such a high-profile
position and after decades of service is unconscionable. The
moment Salamon was informed of the board’s decision he should
have been afforded the opportunity to release a statement and exit
with grace. At the very least, CRB Board leadership should have
immediately commented, offering all the respect Salamon is due. To
allow the news to leak out, as it did, in this day of Twitter and cell
phones, is egregious. Standing behind the veil of an organizational
policy not to comment on personnel matters is cowardly.
Of much greater consequence is what this move and the manner
in which it was handled says to the various CRB stakeholders:
labels, whose sponsorships are critical, and radio, whose ability to
engage in anything outside of their corporate mandate is already
stretched thin. The overall economy, corporate radio ownership and
the advertising downturn are some of the external forces that have
placed CRS at a crossroads, facing possibly its greatest challenges
yet. But less than four months from this momentus CRS, the CRB
Board has cast a pall of uncertainty over the proceedings. Perhaps
the apparent urgency of this move is a reflection of the need for
change, but surely status quo is better than disruption followed by
a much-too-lengthy silence, an inexplicably obtuse non-statement
and no clear plan of succession. At a time when CRB should be
inspiring confidence, stability and growth, this undertone of discord
and disorganization can only give pause to fence-sitters. And those
are numerous, as we’re all painfully aware.
There are far too many smart, capable and experienced professionals
on the CRB Board to have allowed this transition to be so grossly
mishandled. Dismissals are seldom pretty, but certainly there was a
way to manage this that was, at minimum, respectful and courteous

My Tunes: Music That Shaped My Life
Valory Music Co. Dir./Nat’l Promotion
Chris Loss discusses his most important
songs, artists or concerts:
1. Conway Twitty/That’s My Job: Before I
was a dad, I would think of my dad when I
heard this. I still think of him, but now I also
think of [daughter] Bella and our new baby
on the way. “Everything I do is because of
Chris Loss
you to keep you safe with me”.
2. Rascal Flatts/My Wish: Allison and I used this as our wedding
song on Dec. 3, 2006. On Dec. 4th, it was the No. 1 country song in
the USA. I can remember Mike Moore telling me how this song is
everything he would say to his daughter Madison. I totally agree.
3. U2/One: Absolutely brilliant! Johnny Cash’s version is killer, too.
Saw U2 in concert Thanksgiving weekend 2001 in Phoenix; it was
a mind-blowing show. To top it all off, Diamondback [baseball
player] Randy Johnson walked out during the encore with the
World Series trophy. The crowd went nuts!
4. Goo Goo Dolls/Slide: Always reminds me of where I was born
and raised (Niagara Falls, NY) as the Goos are from Buffalo. It’s one
I truly enjoy butchering during Karaoke! 5. Randy Travis, Shenandoah, Erie, PA, Nov. 8, 1990: I was a
freshman at SUNY-Fredonia and a few of us road-tripped to this show,
which Alan Jackson opened. I don’t think I’d be in the industry today
without that fateful night three days after my 18th birthday.
• A highly regarded song or album you’ve never heard: Peter
Frampton’s Frampton Comes Alive.
• An “important” piece of music/band you just don’t get:
Techno is “important” to my wife Allison. It’s one of her guilty
pleasures. Me, not so much.
• An album you played or listened to incessantly: Viva La Vida
from Coldplay is my favorite CD when I’m lifting/doing cardio and
just unplugging from life. Chris Martin is insanely talented!
• One obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to
right now: Michael Jackson’s “Man In The Mirror.” “If you wanna
make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and then
make a change.” Even more relevant after his death.

to someone who has served the organization so well for so long. The
CRB Board has done a great disservice to Ed Salamon. And it has put
four decades of good will at risk at a most inopportune time. Those who
have supported CRB, and will be called upon to continue that support,
deserved better. Ed Salamon, certainly, deserved much better.

And, the list of CMDJ Hall of Famers who worked for Cy
includes Don Owens (‘89), Ted Cramer (‘99), Joe Hoppel (‘02)
and Don Rhea (‘04).
Dan Halyburton joins former KPLX/Dallas
PD Bobby Kraig (Radio, 2008) and former
morning personality Terry Dorsey (CMDJ) as the
third member of the vaunted K-PLEX team from
the ‘80s and early ‘90s to be inducted into the
CRB Hall of Fame. Halyburton is a rare tripleDan Halyburton threat in the broadcast business: Air Personality,
Programmer and Manager. Not only has he done it all, but he’s
done it all at great radio stations. Every set of Country call letters
on his resume qualifies as legendary. He began his career on the
air at WWOK/Miami in 1970 and his first PD gig came in 1974
at WTCR/Huntington, WV. He held PD/on-air jobs at WFMS/
Indianapolis, WDGY/Minneapolis and WQAM/Miami before

joining KPLX as OM in 1981. He rose to Station Manager in
1982, SVP/Mkt. Mgr. for KPLX and three clustermates in 1985
and SVP/GM Group Ops from 1999-2006. Halyburton was
instrumental in two of this format’s most influential brands:
“Flex Your Plex” K-Plex and, in 1998 with top programmer
Brian Philips, the groundbreaking “99.5 The Wolf.” Halyburton
left Susquehanna after 25 years in 2006 to join Emmis/New
York as SVP/Mkt. Mgr. for its three properties. Currently, he is
President of Dallas-based RadioTime.
Mike Hammond was a sophomore in
high school when he first went on the air at
WMCH-AM/Church Hill, TN and fondly recalls
interviewing Tex Ritter and Jeannie C. Riley. He studied broadcasting at the University of
Tennessee, and went to work in the WIVKFM/Knoxville news department in 1973. He

transferred to Dick Broadcasting sisters WKDA
& WKDF/Nashville in 1976, and returned to WIVK as PD
a year later. He was elevated to OM in 1986. Hammond was
named CMA PD of the Year in 1987 and won the prestigious
Edward R. Murrow award for news coverage in 1996. During his
tenure at WIVK, it has become one of the most decorated radio
stations in America – six CMA Station of the Year trophies, three
ACM Station of the Year awards, a pair of Marconis as Medium
Market Station of the Year and another duo as Country Station
or the year. In addition to all that hardware, WIVK also sports
106 straight Arbitrons as the top-rated station in Knoxville, a
winning streak that stretches back to 1974. During that skein,

following only two weeks on the job. Asked if
he minded changing his name to Bill Bailey, he
got the gig and went on to become a fixture in
the market. Two years later, 1961, Bailey moved
to crosstown Country KIKK starting a more
than 20-year run in the market that included a
Bill Bailey
move to KENR. Along the way, he provided
country music for three Apollo moon missions and a Skylab
flight, received NASA’s highest civilian award for public service,
earned Country PD of the Year from Billboard and Gavin (1970)
and CMA Large Market Disc Jockey (1979). Bailey also spent
several years hosting “Continental Country,” the airline’s in-flight
music channel. Being elected Harris County Constable in 1982
brought his radio career to a close, though he continues to voice
commercials and make on-air appearances around
the annual Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo.
WPOC/Baltimore morning host Laurie
DeYoung spent college summers working at
WMUZ/Detroit, moving on after college to
stations in Fremont, MI and several in Grand
Rapids. After a short run out west at Soft Rock
KBZT/San Diego, DeYoung jumped to Baltimore Laurie DeYoung
in 1985, beginning a 23-years-and running tenure at WPOC.
One of a very few women running their own major market
morning show, she’s received many award nominations and
was named CMA Large Market Air Personality in 1994. WPOC
was one of the first stations to broadcast from Nashville during
CMA Awards week in 1988, and at the time, DeYoung was two

weeks from delivering her second child. But country stars were
quick to offer moral support: June Carter Cash told her, “Having
babies, that hurts!” Beyond radio, DeYoung also spent seven
years hosting New Country Video on Maryland Public Television,
syndicated to an additional 60 markets.
KEAN & KYYW-AM/Abilene PD/MD/
morning host Rudy “Fearless” Fernandez began
his career with a weekend top 40 show in 1973.
His first Country job was at KCAD-AM/Abilene
in 1975, where he soon became MD/PM driver.
In 1978, Fernandez helped launch KEAN-FM &
AM, handling afternoons on the FM and middays
on the AM. More than 30 years later, Fernandez Rudy Fernandez
is still handling programming and music for both stations, and
mornings on KEAN. Fernandez helped launch a Classic Country
format on KEAN-AM known as “The Ranch” in 2000. In 2003,
KEAN-AM became KYYW. Accomplishments include CMA
Small Market Station of the Year (1987), Gavin MD of the Year
(1990, 1997, 2001), Abilene Reporter-News Air Personality of
the Year for the last 10 years, and R&R Drive Time Dominator
(1996, 1997, 1998, 1999). He is most proud of the “St. Jude
Jams” he established in 2000 that have since raised almost
$750,000, as well as his role in area emergency communication.
Fernandez personally, and successfully, issued one of the first
