Sample Concept Proposal Template – Making Maritime Memories Headland Park Public Art Name: XXXXXXX School: XXXXXX Class: XXXX The following is a proposed concept for a public art installation to be located on Headland Park Barangaroo. The concept addresses the artist’s brief which states: Your brief is to plan a Site Specific public art installation, to be situated at the new Headland Park Barangaroo that celebrates the maritime heritage of Sydney Harbour. Your inspiration will be taken particularly from the area around Walsh Bay, Millers Point and Darling Harbour East. Aspects of marine life may be the subject of your artwork, however you should consider incorporating maritime materials and forms. Artwork Name: ‘Our harbour’s Heritage’ (Hint: Think of a catchy title that describes your artwork) Artists Name: XXXXXXXXX Concept (Hint: write the main ideas that helped you develop your concept here) My artwork consists of three metal shipping containers placed on top of each other and encased in a durable material embedded with images of maritime heritage. The main concept behind this artwork is to showcase, through powerful visual images, the changing maritime heritage of Sydney’s waterfront, from traditional Gadigal uses of Sydney Harbour prior to European settlement, to the various ways people have interacted with the waterfront in the 18th, 19th and 20th century. The artwork extends into the harbour over the water in a prominent position. In developing the concept for this artwork, the positioning of the installation was critically important, as I wanted the artwork to make a bold and visible statement about the importance of maritime activities to the growth and development f Sydney as a m aritime city. o As the artwork celebrates maritime heritage, I particularly wanted the installation to be visible from ships on the water, particularly cruise boats travelling to and from the Overseas Passenger Terminal at Balmain and from ferries and cruise boats traveling around Headland Park to Darling Harbour. The installation is intended to develop in the viewer, a better understanding and appreciation of Sydney’s maritime heritage, particularly how maritime related activities have helped change the warfront over time. Installation picture (Hint: draw, scan or photograph your artwork and place it here) Front View Back View Materials and Size (Hint: describe the size, materials used in your artwork or any other information) The public art installation consists of three metal shipping containers approximately 3m high x 5m wide that sit atop one another. These containers represent the industrial materials used in the area and the main way cargo was moved on this site over many years. The containers are sheathed in a white, semi transparent material similar to a see-‐through roller blind. The material is both synthetic and durable. The viewer will be able to see both the images embedded in the fabric and the shipping containers beneath. The material is sourced from Power Textiles Limited (PTL), which develops and optimises textile fabrics on which solar (photovoltaic) cells have been directly integrated. Therefore, the fabric acts as a solar collector partially offsetting the energy used to light the installation at night. The images are screen printed onto the fabric, which surrounds the containers, and protrude approximately 15 centimetres from the container’s surface on metal rods. The top of the containers has a stylised map showing the original shoreline in 1820, highlighting the proposed shoreline of the redeveloped Headland Park. This map is visible from both the park, surrounding high-‐rise buildings and tall cruise ships. Inspiration for artwork -‐ images/Photos/sketches (Hint: place drawings, photographs or any other information that inspired your artwork here) Artwork Location -‐ Site and Situation (Hint: use the image from the website and mark out where your artwork will be located) The installation is to be situated on a platform perpendicular to the shoreline and extending out into the harbour to represent the orientation of the original finger wharves at Millers Point, and to mimic the adjacent finger wharves at Walsh Bay. It is deliberately placed in one of the most prominent positions in Headland Park and designed to be visible from multiple location throughout the park, from locations on the harbour and from surrounding suburbs. As the sides of the installation will be illuminated at night, it will be a highly visible reminder of Sydney’s maritime heritage both night and day. Artwork Location Map Proposed site for artwork Elevations (Hint: view the Headland Park video on the website and pause it where you would like your artwork to be placed. Use either Command/shift/4 on a mac or screen shot on a PC. If possible, insert an image of your artwork or draw where you would like your artwork to go on the picture) Aerial view looking North
