BE A BUDDY…NOT A BULLY
#ANTIBULLYINGWEEK
PRIMARY RESOURCE PACK
Anti-Bullying week 2015:
Monday 16th November 2015 – Friday 20th
November 2015
Be a buddy not a bully!
The B-safe Team
The Safeguarding Board of Wolverhampton is responsible for
keeping all young people safe across the City. They are in charge
of making sure all young people going through any sort of child
protection order or any service to support young people is safe and
helping young people to the best of their ability.
As part of the Safeguarding board, they wanted young people to
be part in this process and the UK’s first junior safeguarding board
was created called the B-Safe team. The B-Safe team aims to
enable young people to hold and be duty bearers for the
Safeguarding board. The B-Safe team focuses on young people’s
participation in decision-making processes and raise awareness
and drive campaigns on key priorities affecting young people
including bullying.
This year’s Anti-Bullying week is from the 16th -20th November, the
aim of the week is to educate and create awareness on bullying
whether it is happening to them face to face or online.
The aims for Anti-Bullying week are:
 Educate young people on what bullying is and how to
prevent bullying
 Raise awareness of the impact of bullying on young people’s
lives and how it can make young people feel
 Encourage organisations to talk and discuss bullying with
young people so they feel safe and confident to report all
forms of bullying
The B-safe Team have created some resources in support of AntiBullying week which are suitable for primary and secondary
students. These activities are designed to be flexible and done
alone or as a whole class.

Anti-Bullying Charter
The Anti-Bullying Charter has been designed by the B-Safe Team
to develop and drive the Anti Bullying Strategy for the City. The
Charter is a set of rights and commitments that young people and
professionals should discuss, respect and promote.
The Anti-Bullying Charter should support every child in the City of
Wolverhampton to feel safe against bullying in any setting i.e.
schools, youth clubs and community groups.
There should be no place in our City for bullying and each one of
us has a role in taking action to prevent it and make sure we
create safer, bullying free environments. The first step to this is
signing up to the Anti-Bullying Charter.
To sign up the Charter, you will need to print it off and discuss the
statements with the young people. Once the young people are
happy with each of the statements, please display the Charter in
your school or organisation with staff and students signatures
beneath it. The Charter should be visible for young people to see
as a reminder of their commitment to prevent bullying.
In the coming months we will then be in touch to come and talk to
you about the Anti-Bullying Strategy for the City for the next two
years.
Thank you together we can make
a stand against bullying!!

Assembly Power Point
You will need to download the primary powerpoint which
accompanies this assembly plan
Slide 1
 Introduce Anti-Bullying week
Slide 2
 Sit Class down, and ask the class the question
what is bullying and what is not bullying?
What is Bullying?
Bullying is when someone is being hurt either by words or actions, feels bad
because of it, and has a hard time stopping what is happening to them.
Bullying happens more than once, the bully/s do it over and over and over
again and they take away your self-esteem and confidence
What is not bullying?
There are also some behaviours, which, although they might be unpleasant or
distressing, are not bullying:
Not liking someone
Being excluded
Accidentally bumping into someone
Making other kids play things a certain way
A single act of telling a joke about someone
Arguments
Expression of unpleasant thoughts or feelings regarding others
Isolated acts of harassment, aggressive behaviour, intimidation, or meanness
Slide 3
Give pupils some flipchart paper and pens and get
them in groups to discuss:
1. what bullying means to them
2. What types of bullying there are (Cyber, Physical, Emotional etc.)
4
Slide 4
 Go through the slides on what types of bullying
there are, and discuss if the children knew of
each. Get them back into groups, to discuss how
each of these types of bullying happen. For
example:






Verbal or written abuse – calling names, writing sticky notes on your back
Physical - punching, kicking, fighting
Sexual harassment – touching you in a way you do not like
Homophobia – bullying you over your sexuality
Discrimination – bullying you over your race/culture/disability
Cyberbullying – posting pictures online that you do not want, hacking your
profile, writing things on social sites, texting/phoning you horrible things.
Slide 5
 Read through the effects of bullying at school.
Ask the students if they think the effects are
correct or not, and discuss how bullying could
affect their future. For Example:
5

Depression/anxiety – Feel negative about their selves, will not want to
get out of bed in the morning, therefore they will not want to engage in
any work/school related activities. May lose out on friendships.

Changes in sleep and eating patterns – Will not get enough sleep for
their body to repair, and their brain to be healthy. May lose too much
weight, will not get the right amount of vitamins and nutrients, could
develop an eating disorder.

Loss of interest in activities – miss out on a talent they enjoy, and
opportunities for their future. Friendships may be lost if they are not
participating in some activities. May lead to feeling lonely and isolated.
VIDEO
 Slide 6
Take a look at the real stories that are effects of
bullying. Discuss as a class each story, the age, why
they were being bullied, and what help they needed.
Now ask them to think anonymously about these
questions.
1. Do you think you are being bullied?
2. Do you feel you are bullying anyone?
3. Do you feel at the point of the children in the
stories?
4. Are you making someone feel that way?
Now get them to keep their answers to their selves, as
they will need them later.
Slide 7
Go through the statistics with the class. Then
back in groups, ask them to discuss how the feel
about these, and what could be in place to
prevent them.
6

50% of young people have bullied another person, 30% of which do it
at least once a week.
23% a females with ginger hair cited their hair colour as the bullying
aggressor.

Highest risks to bullying were the following groups: all types of
disability, LGBT and low income backgrounds.

45% did not report bullying. 32% of which felt it would not be taken
seriously, 32% were too embarrassed and 26% were scared of it
getting worse.

Overall, 47% of young people want to change their appearance. 48%
want teeth whitening, 17% breast implants, 6% liposuction and 5%
botox.
Slide 8
before going through this slide, ask the students to
think back to the questions they were asked.
1. Do you think you are being bullied?
2. Do you feel you are bullying anyone?
3. Do you feel at the point of the children in the
stories?
Ask them if they have their answer, and then
continue with the slides. Read through where they
can get support, and discuss if they know of any
other places where they can go for help/advice
.

Game time!
We have made a board game for all students to
play around bullying. You will need to print off the
board game and the coloured activity cards 06a –
06d. One board for up to 2 players and you will
need a dice.
How to play;
1. Find a counter (rubber, sharpener, paperclip etc)
2. Roll the dice and work your way around the board
3. Select the same colour activity card
to match the section you land on
4. The play next to you reads out the card (answers are
also on the card) if you get it correct, you can stay where
you are, if you get it wrong you will have to start the game
again.
If you land on an orange, there will be a picture, you have
to discuss the picture in the group you in if this is bullying?
What could be the effect of this? What support could be
provided for it?
The first one to get to the end, with all questions correct
wins!

Activity: Is this Bullying?
Do you know what bullying is?
The B-Safe team have created a resource which
looks at different types of bullying and different
perspectives.
The purpose of this activity is to determine
whether the scenarios are cases of bullying or
not. You will need to download the Primary AntiBully presentation and worksheets for each of
the students. The power point will first show a
video with a scenario and you will have to
decide whether this is a case of bullying or not.
You will then need to click on the next slide and
the answer will be revealed. In total there are 10
scenarios for the activity.
