LGT Lesson 3 – Parts of Plants
Garden Visit
The students can show the LGT Coordinator what is happening with their plants and worms. The
LGT Coordinator can help troubleshoot problems and answer student questions.
Exploring Plant Parts
What do we need to grow? Focus on healthy foods. What are the parts of plants and which ones
can we eat? Read Up, Down, and Around. Which plant parts grow up? Down? Around? Place a
number of stations around the room, each with edible plants for the students to see and touch.
Explore the plants. Students choose one plant to draw what they think it would look like when it is
growing. Write down what part of the plant it is. For example, “A carrot is a root”. Discuss as a class.
Extension: make a salad with one vegetable of each of group (one leaf, one fruit, etc.) In groups,
make a recipe. Make a composite of all the recipes to make a class salad later that week or allow
each group to make their recipe. Make an herb salad dressing.
Conclusion
 What parts of our LGT plants will/do we eat?
 How can we use all the parts of a plant? (e.g. roots and leaves of carrots)
